Potato chip blocks
Sometimes I think I've totally lost my mind. My sewing room will be turned into another bedroom, but on the main level instead of upstairs with the rest of the bedrooms because of my back and hip issues climbing stairs (17 steps) is not always pleasant for me. I thought I was about midway through making a Potato Chip Block quilt out of my scraps. Each block uses 18 rectangles cut 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" which will finish about 12" x 12". My calculator tells me I'm not even close with 18 blocks made....I still need another 30 or more to make a 70" x 90" twin sized quilt. Now my husband mentions he thought a full bed or a queen would be better for the room in case of company. I had planned on using each fabric print only once in the quilt, but looks as if I'll be digging into my strip stash to cut more blocks, using some two or three times. I'll be working on this quilt until long after I'm no longer senile or dead...LOL Anyone else ever do this to themselves?

Yes, I have made several quilts using that method. I cut lots of strips to size and make a couple of blocks whenever I needed to refresh my mind with a different project. You can make the blocks larger if you wish. Two of the ones I made I chose a color way and dove into my scraps and stash to make the blocks. I did keep a consistent center, but that was my choice and need to have some order to my scrappniness. ;)
You might want to consider strip piecing and make perhaps 10 blocks at a time. Just a thought. Good luck, I have seen very few potato chip quilts that I did not like. |
What is a potato chip quilt? Google was no help. Said it was a thin sliced potato...

Here is the YouTube video where I discovered the Potato Chip block. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lyBtI2086I The presenter, Brenda, is warm and friendly, makes mistakes and corrects them before your eyes and then in additional videos shows alternatives to the basic Potato Chip block. Make those scraps disappear!
