Yesterday at the quilt show, I bought a kit to make potatoe baking bags. I'm curious what it's supposed to look like. Has anybody made one, could you share a picture?

There are many threads on this with patterns and warnings some have had theirs catch on fire and others suggest using 100%cotton everything.

OMG I have a thread about potato bags. Mine caught on fire in the microwave. I have used them for years. Everything and I mean everthing was 100% cotton and yet for some reason this one happened to catch on fire. It is a good thing I was in the kitchen. I would never ever use one again.

Did this have the new batting in the kit, especially made for these bags?

So, maybe I don't want to make anymore of these. ;) The one I made looks odd, so I was wondering what they're even supposed to look like. The kit stated that the batting and fabric were both 100% cotton, I had hoped that would be ok.

The new fabric makes them pretty safe now. But, I never leave things in my stove or microwave unless I am close.

The label on the new batting also cautions against using fabric with metallic threads running through it.

I just made some last week from a kit I got at a quit show. They are rectangular with a fold over flap. I have used them with no trouble several times. The batting is very hard to sew through because it's all cotton, dense and thick.

100% cotton batting has scrim. The scrim is what catches on fire in some microwaves. If the cotton batting does not say no scrim it has it. It's a very thin layer of poly over the cotton, not enough to list on the package but enough to catch fire. There is scrim free cotton batting available now just for these bags. A low wattage microwave usually doesn't get hot enough to cause a fire but the get hot in a second microwaves will get hot fast.
