I bought a pounce and didn't like it at all. It didn't make clear lines, and I felt like it came off too easily from the time I did it til I got the quilt in position to quilt it.

I have the pounce with both the blue and while 'old' chalk. I've never had any success with getting the stencil lines marked clearly with it. And I agree that it does create quite a bit of dust. That said I also never had an issue with the chalk coming off of any fabrics - sometimes too quickly! I don't think I'd want a chalk that I needed heat to make it disappear. I also use the multi-colored chalk pencils and have much better luck with those. I've also migrated to using a #2 mechanical pencil except when it doesn't show up on the fabric I'm working with. Never had an issue with either the chalk or the #2 pencil washing out.

If you prime it real good, you don't really have to "pounce" the chalk onto the stencil. I use it quite often with regular stencils too since they really don't have the kind of stencils I require at the Pounce website. I kind of smear it onto the stencils and it works fine. It irons off prett quickly for me too. I got the blue one that is supposed to wash off, but haven't used it yet.

The lines are clear enough to know where you are going with it, they are slightly wider if you use their stencils, but if you use regular plastic stencils the lines are clearer. I'm a new FMQ'r and found this to be the easiest way to do larger areas faster than using a pencil.

Instructor for a class I took says she used talc powder rather than chalk.

I have the regular pounce pads in blue and white and have no problems with either. One thing I feel I should mention with the regular chalk is first washing to remove any marks that remain should be plain cold water wash with NO SOAP. Some detergents have chemicals that will actually set the colored chalk. I have successfully used the regular blue chalk on a WOW fabric and the blue washed out no problem in a plain cold water wash with no soap.

I am getting a feeling a lot of posters are using the product incorrectly. You are supposed to take the pad with cover ON and give it a good rap against a hard surface, cover side down. This primes the pad full of chalk. Then you RUB the pad over your stencil. The name of a product is a bit of a misnomer because you do not pounce it. You RUB it over your stencil using the same motion you would use erasing a chalkboard. Using the product this way always produces a very clear, easily visable line for me. That said, the chalk does come off very easily. When using with a LA just the hopping vibration of the machine is enough to make the chalk marking release from my quilt. I can imagine how easy it will rub off when doing FMQ on a DSM. I will have to try the hairspray trick.

I also read (haven't tried) that you can use cinnamon in the pounce. When I told my friend about it she said, "Oh, that's great. But then how do I stop from licking my quilt." LOL.

I have the white pounce and find it messy and if I didn't get to the quilting fast enough it would fall off. I have been using the blue pencil that washes out and have had no problems. of course, I test it on the fabric first, to be sure.

I use Miracle chalk in mine (white only), it goes away with the heat of an iron. Have never had good luck with the blue.
