When I first got my Pfaff a few years ago, one of the staff told me about pre-wound bobbins for quilters. She said they hold much more thread, so they last longer. This store has since gone out of business, so I can't ask them. Anybody buy these? Is the thread good quilting thread? Do you like them...or not like them? And, do you have to order them on-line?
One more question, Loretta. My machine has a sensor that tells me when the bobbin is running low....Is their bobbin clear or is there a way I can still have the sensor work with it?
I have a Juki sewing machine on a little gracie frame, I bought some prewound bobbins from Bayside Quilting they work great but they were 100% cotton and I'm new at all this and not sure if these prewound polyester bobbins would work as good, anyone know?
Thanks, Loretta. I went on the first web site link you gave me. I ordered some bobbins, needles and thread. I appreciate your help.
I keep a tube of them in my sewing tote to use when I go to classes. It's easier to use those then to have to bring home empty bobbins . And there will be someone in class who runs out of bobbin thread and can use them too.

I almost bought some pre-wound bobbins (the ones made of cardboard) when I first got my Brother embroidery machine. It advises against it in the owner's manual. IT said the machine wouldn't work properly with them. I don't think that machine would work properly if you look at the wrong way, though. I bet the bobbins would be great for my other machines. I see you ordered some, and I hope they work great. Let us know.

I have never seen cardboard ones. I wasn't sure about the pre-filled bobbins because my manual also said use only 'their' brand (Kenmore) but I went to a class and the teacher had two for each student in a special color to match what were doing and they worked great! I had no problems what so ever with them! I am going to keep my eyes open for them more often now!

Do you use them for quilting? Or just piecing and general sewing?
The ones I purchased are on clear plastic bobbins and my Husqvarna Sapphire 870 does not indicate when the bobbin is low with them... nor does it with the blue Husq. bobbins from my Lily 540....I have to use the green Husq. bobbins for my machine to indicate when the bobbin is running low. I don't usually piece with the bobbins that are pre-filled I usually just use them if doing fancy stitching with a stabilizer behind them. The thread is definitely lighter maybe a 60 wt ??? and I usually piece with a 50 wt.

I have seen them and been tempted. Haven't got any yet. After reading this I think I'm going to try them.

the ones on the first site are poly. how does that work out with cotton top thread?
I never thought that I would use prewound bobbins, I changed my mind, when I got my big embroidery machine, it came with several, I can get them cheap, in bulk in white, I usually use them for emboidery, I did find them in color once but the store since went into retirement. I have left the cardboard on and taken it off, the sensors work better with it off. As it is compressed the thread doesn't unravel on them when you do this. They do have more thread on them. I have not used prewound withthe long arm yet, they are harder to find and I have to go to yet another store for them. It came with a bobbin winder that is really fast though as well so I wind my own to match color better.

It does save a lot of time, especially when I can use 6 or more just on the embroidery machine alone, let alone if I am sewing and or quilting at the same time.
If I am really on a roll, I can have the big brother (pr620) going the brother 8500 or something(not sure) and sew or quilt at the same time. I tend to go though a lot of thread on those days.
Ive used the clear plastic ones and like them. They do hold alot of thread.
Got mine thru Quilt in a Days website. |
How do we find out if the work on our machines? Mine is a Juki TL-98 Q

I bought 144 cardboard ones on ebay once. They worked great with my machine at the time. I have a few left, but found that the Bobbin Winder, what is it called -- The Sidewinder, will fill bobbins so much fuller, that I wind mine on that now and it is great. Really fills the bobbins, no matter which machine I am winding for. Some sizes don't fit on it, but all of my Janome's bobbins do. They are super for my embroidery machine, had to change the regular, wound on the machine bobbin, 3 times. Only used one bobbin wound on the Sidewinder for the same design.
another source. they have both cotton and polyester; reasonable prices; class L and class 15 (best size for Janome). all are plastic. judging by the picture, you can easily re-use their class 15s. i'm not sure about the class Ls since they don't have the little holes in the tops.
http://www.terradonembroidery.com/clear_glide_15.htm i've also used the prewound bobbins from quiltinaday.com, which are class L (no little holes). even though they aren't the "correct" size for my Janome, they work just fine for piecing and the low-bobbin sensor works. i guess we could drill little holes in the used class Ls and re-use those, too. |
My Pfaff dealer warned me to be sure and use the prewound bobbins MEANT specifically for embroidery. The regular prewound bobbins' thread is too heavy for embroidery and can jam your machine.
