If your LQS won't cut exactly what you need, to 1/8th yard, go somewhere else. That's what they're there for. Even Joanne will cut what you need with no minimum.

Yes I have; and have found that it can be a pricey way to go, unless they are on a really good sale. I am on fixed income and can use the money saved by buying yardage, to be able to purchase more fabric.

M cubed 02-17-2014 08:48 AM

I don't buy a lot of precuts, but I have found that the 5" charm packs are wonderful for an applique stash. Many scrappy applique patterns use a small amount of fabric for the pieces and I can get the look I want without having to make swiss cheese of my yardage - plus they store easily.

Veronica 02-17-2014 08:59 AM

I just purchased my first jelly roll, and it will be my last.
I like to pre wash so nothing less than a fat quarter for me.
Yardage gives you more opportunities, your not limited to 2 1/2".

garysgal 02-17-2014 09:04 AM

I buy lots of pre-cuts because I have trouble putting colors together and with a pre-cut package all the line is there. then I can add solids if I want. The 5" charms are great for Dresden plates. I make a lot of table runners with those and each charm makes 2 blades. I know the cost of the pre-cuts vs yardage is not so good, but I like the fact that it's all together in one package.

jaly3162 02-17-2014 10:13 AM

The precuts are good to use for "The Little Twister" patterns. A layer cake makes a nice size quilt and has lots of variety.

The charms were off 1/4 inch on one side... so much for a fast easy project. I hade to recut and the pattern I had my heart set on was to use every bit of the 5 inch square.

I've had the same issue--the 5 inch weren't true and I didn't check until I discovered that my whole block was off. Wound up having to trim every one down to 4 7/8" so they would match.

How do I measure a precut charm pack?

How do I measure a precut charm pack, etc?

JanieH 02-17-2014 12:35 PM

I just finished a number of Civil War reproductions and batiks charm packs, mostly Moda, for making 2 Dear Jane quilts. I wanted the variety of the fabrics so this was a great way to get it.

I have used charms and jelly rolls in other projects and loved using them.

1/4 yard = 8 squares
1 fat quarter = 12 squares
1/2 yard = 24 squares
3/4 yard = 40 squares
1 yard = 56 squares

Rhealene 02-17-2014 12:57 PM

I buy a lot of fat quarter bundles..easy to cut layer cakes or charms from them if that is what I need..and I like to buy jelly rolls too. Sometimes I pick 1 or 2 fabrics from a bundle and order yardage for borders..but I am finding I like quilts without borders lot too..depending on the pattern and size I want.

At lets say $11.95/yd fabric, then that is $11.95 * 3yds = $35.85, typical jelly rolls are around $30-35 each....

so assuming variations in fabric prices (balis more than printed) then you are basically paying the same as yardage. The difference is that you get anywhere from 20 - 40 different fabrics rather than a handful.

Your math is right on! But I am still not going to order any more precuts. I ordered some butterfly squares that were so whompered they had to be sashed with fabric of different widths to finally get them square enough to use. The quilt is beautiful, but it sure wouldn't pass muster with the quilt police. It would probably cost me more to fussy cut fabric of that sort, but at least it would be approximately square. dnf

Zinda 02-17-2014 02:50 PM

I, too, hesitate in purchasing pre-cuts. I've heard of similar problems mentioned above.

meanmom 02-17-2014 03:31 PM

I haven't had problems with precuts being the wrong size. I just don't buy a lot of precuts because I like to pick my own colors. Also a lot of the quilts I make wouldn't work with precuts. Also I am trying not to buy fabric at all right now. I just finished a bento box quilt that called for a jelly roll, I cut it from my stash.

mjpEncinitas 02-17-2014 04:08 PM

I have purchased two jelly rolls. The idea is in my head about what I'm going to do about it. I even have refined it when I can't sleep at night. but I haven't used them yet. I would say in the next three years they'll get used. They are Bali jelly rolls. Thank you luvstoquilt301 now I know to check them carefully. My idea doesn't require them to be perfect. I always assumed they were expensive yardage wise and only bought them if they were on sale. I've always bought them at quilt stores. Never was drawn to the ones at Joanne's.

I chose a Strip It Quilt and it called for pre cut Tonga Treats two and a half in. wide which I bought three rolls at least. The pattern warned me to measure the strips and sure enough they weren't all that width so I had to cut down to make them all the same width. It was a tedious job and the fraying made it messy as I handled and sewed the strips. I'm also not sure how to line up the pre cuts since the ones I used were pinked (zig zagged) on the edges. Maybe someone has better ideas how to handle the mis-measured pieces and how to line up the edges of pinked strips. Beware the strips aren't always the exact measurement, everyone! The quilt turned out so nice in spite of the extra cutting I had to do for the not so accurate pre-measured!

I don't buy hexagons and rarely will I buy honey buns - I always look for sales and check out many sites before I buy - I usually buy Moda, Riley Blake or Robert Kaufman - I've never had a problem with sizes on my precuts - also I do not have an accuquilt cutter or any other cutting device (other than my rotary cutter and ruler) so I like how it saves me time. I have found many free patterns and I have many books using pre-cuts. I don't usually pay full price - so you can find great deals and the fabric is first rate - so I will continue to buy pre-cuts as long as I can.

Hi Otis - long time no talk. I am a lover of pre-cuts also. I just bought 5 charms of 30s fabric. I didn't own any 30s fabric but felt I needed to. I have jelly rolls, layer cakes and lots of fat quarter bundles. I love to work with them. I don't have an eye for color. If I try to make up a quilt at a LQS, the person behind the counter will tell me that my colors don't match. One is too yellow, one is too orange, etc. So I buy fabric lines in any way possible. I buy yards out of a fabric line and it works well. I also buy quilt kits. I buy them from LQS, from magazines and online. I don't prewash, so I don't worry about the small pieces. I know lots of people buy pre-cuts, maybe not from this board, but when Jenny Doan has her 'Quilter's Daily Deal', I usually can't get it because it's sold out. I live in Pacific time, so I'm always late for those deals. But I believe pre-cuts are very beneficial for me.

Kira Adare 02-18-2014 05:37 AM

I generally prefer to buy yardage *but* do enjoy buying the occassional precuts if I like almost everything in the pack. I usually buy my charm packs from MSQC when they have a daily deal; picking up the one super cheap then usually buy 3 more at regular price just so I have enough. And sometimes I'll buy 1-2 yards of coordinating yardage too. I generally don't have a pattern in mind when I buy them but at least I'll have them handy when I find a pattern I like :)

WMUTeach 02-18-2014 05:41 AM

I know that this is silly but I have bought three jelly rolls in the past year because I just LOVED the colors but I have not found the perfect pattern for them. I will. I have never bought a lay cake or charm pack. I have so much in my stash that I want to be a good user of what is on hand.

I used two "River Rock" Bali Pops (jelly rolls) and 1 charm pack for this graduation throw for a tall young man. The cuts were very accurate and without pinking. It was quick to make.

I'm Pacific Coast also and have yet to miss out on one of the 'Quilter's Daily Deal'.
maybe it's because I get up fairly early.

I love precursor for the comfort quilts I make. I buy them from Missouri Star quilts or jellyrolls.net. Never had a problem with them. MSQ and Liz at jellyroll both give great free patterns and tutorials. My mom, not a quilter, will sew the strips together that I cut blocks and use for the comfort quilts. I don't own an Accuquilt, so these work for me. Other quilts, I do rotary cut myself. Love to quilt and whatever makes that easier, I'm all over it.

maryfrang 02-18-2014 09:34 AM

I do buy pre cuts at times. I think they are great way for young people to make their first quilts. I am working with 4H kids with quilting and for their first project and younger members they make a great way to make a quick quilt for them. Then I work with them cutting their own fabric to make a quilt. I so recommend they look at Missouri Star Quilting for their precuts.

sdeaaz 02-18-2014 12:38 PM

loved reading everyone take on precuts... I have just recently bought a few charm packs.... (from Missouri Star... can't beat their daily deals.).. My only trouble is that pinked edge.... had to get use to that and making sure everything is lined up correctly. I wouldn't buy them unless they are on sale... unfortunately I buy for projects ... not to increase my stash... so always need a project in mind...

If they post at midnight Central Time it's 11:00 Mountain Time and 10:00 Pacific Time. Check before you go to bed.

I buy a few because I hand applique mostly. Have never thought to measure any of them. Have purchased 5", 10" and fat quarters. I will and see what I have and/or thought I had. Thanks for the board.

papple 02-18-2014 02:00 PM

I too, purchased several jelly rolls from Joann's and received one as a gift, they are all off. Now so far they have all measured 2 1/2" but the edges are wavy and I have had to trim them all. I am planning on using them in a jelly roll race...Some race, I lost before I began. Very disappointed. I gave one as a gift to my Secret Pal and now I will have to tell her to make sure she re-measures them all.

fireworkslover 02-18-2014 02:41 PM

I myself don't buy/use them, much. I have bought one jelly roll and 1 charm pack - both happened to be Batiks. I usually buy yardage and the occasional FQ. Last year and this year, I'm trying not to buy and use what I have. When I do use them, I'm cutting them in smaller pieces yet, since I do a lot of PP or wonky strip piecing.

A1Lori 02-18-2014 03:32 PM

I don't usually use them. I am making a quilt now, and chose to use a layer cake. I'm using batiks and I wanted scrappy. more for a variety of color effects than anything else. That was the cheapest way to do it. Pre-cuts are more expensive, but FQ's were too much for my project and this way I got lots of variety with little excess. The fact the colors all coordinate is nice. Generally, I love picking fabrics. That is my favorite part of the process. This just worked for this quilt.

PumpkinSundae 02-18-2014 03:43 PM

I have been buying some precuts. I don't feel like I am so good at putting colors together so the precuts are great for me.

mcdaniel023 02-18-2014 04:21 PM

Hi Dreamer! I use pre cuts and have a nice stash of them. I usually use them when I need a quick project. I have never had a problem with any of them.

DebbE 02-18-2014 08:29 PM

Connecting Threads sells their pre cuts for exactly the cost of what that fraction of a yard would cost -- there are no markups for pre cuts. Their fabrics are beautiful, and the fabric is great, and those are the only pre cuts I will buy. I won't buy pre cuts from other sources because I can't see paying more. I've got 40 years of scraps that I'm still working my way through cutting up into the Bonnie Hunter sizes -- so I've got LOADS of my own pre cuts.

I pretty much only buy Moda jelly rolls, charm packs, and desert rolls. They are fun to shop for, they always coordinate and they are good material.

Ladies, I don't buy too many pre cuts but love the idea of them. How about some pictures? Should we start a thread in the picture folder for pre cuts?

how the heck are you doing !!!

regarding pics

should be fine to add them to this thread should anyone care to.
I am mostly interested in your purchasing of them only.

bearisgray 02-19-2014 06:51 AM

I prefer yardage. I have purchased scraps. - some were great deals - a couple of them were not!

mattsmom1204 02-19-2014 09:02 AM

Though I have yardage, I find that I am falling for pre cuts. I like quick projects so charms, jelly rolls, fqs, a well as my newest find candy charms are my quilters toys.
