Do any of you use the Press 'n Seal stuff with your Applique' work? Someone was talking about it yesterday at all day sew--I had forgotten about that technique. Is there a method of applique' you prefer?

Press and seal for applique? Can you explain this?

I think you just lay it over and trace your pattern. Lay it on your fabric and press with your hand again. Then cut out your applique' and place it. You can even sew through the press and seal and it tears away easily. I am sure this is the way it is done.

I don't even like Press & Seal for food storage! It leaves a residue on the edge of any dish or container it's used on - doesn't even come off in the dishwasher:( That said, I would not use it for applique simply because I would not want any my fabric. Any benefit it may have in the applique process is to me useless since it's not worth potential damage to the fabric.

I traced a quilting pattern on it and pressed it on my border and quilted through it. Everything worked great til I tried to remove it. It was a pain and left a little sticky residue on the fabric. Thank goodness the quilt was for me. I'll never use it again.

Wow, thanks for this thread, glad to read what not to use. I could see myself ruining something trying to remove the residue. I appreciate the advice.

Good to know about the sticky residue! LOL!! It seems like if anything will happen or go wrong it will happen to my projects - Murphy's Law! Thanks for the info!

Interesting .. I've used it in machine embroidery and havent noticed the residue. I use it as a topper on towels

Even if it left a residue, it would be under the applique if you put it on the wrong side, wouldnt that be an advantage?

i tried it once was told you could draw your design on it with a marker put it on the quilt top and stitch through it...so we did...and when we removed it (which was a pain) we had black marks all over...everywhere the needle punched through it left a black dot on the quilt...we used a sharpie, maybe it wasn't dry? but i think it was, anyway, i have not tried it for anything since...it's a pain to work with and i love freezer paper :)

I've read that people will draw their design on a sheet of paper, put the press and seal on, and then sew the lines without thread. Then take the press and seal and put it on your quilt, then pounce with a chalk type pad to mark the design through the holes. Obviously you'd be limited to the size of the paper but it wouldn't get black dots on the fabric. I haven't tried it-I'm too chicken to try any kind of free motion quilting.

remembered something else I learned when doing machine embroidery.... put the iron near it .... the iron helps get rid of the little bits
