I use 2 blue jean legs and a tea towel when I want to work in another room. I also have one of those old heat mats that works great. Metal on top with some sort of insulation and cardboard backing. My grandmothers used them way back when but I only see them at yard sales now. They make great portable ironing boards.

You can easily make a small pressing pad. Take 2 peices muslin cut to any size usually 14-16" square. Put a piece of batting and thermo brite insulation fabric between layers. turn under edges and stitch. Makes nice pressing pad for blocks. the thermo brite stuff can be gotten at Joann's for about $4 yd without coupon.

I have a cutting mat that has an ironing surface on the flip side. That's what I use.

I use a towel on my granite island - takes less space & works well for blocks - not so great for husbands shirts though!

The heat from too much ironing can unstick the old timey counter tops! Learned from experience :(

I took a tv tray and stapled batting to it, then made a cover for it. Like a mini ironing board.
