I purchased a beautiful kit from Connecting Threads, and the material is so beautiful and feels so soft & nice. My question is do I really have to prewash? I have always done so in all my other fabric, and in that fabric you can usually feel the sizing & all in the fabric.
This is my first sewing on Connecting Threads fabric, and cannot belive how soft it is. Hopefully someone else that has sewn their fabric can help me please? |
You could gently hand wash it and line dry instead of putting it in the washer & dryer.
I personally do not prewash any of my fabric and in 30+ years, I've not had a problem with shrinkage after it's been used in a quilt. The reason I don't is because not only do I not want to iron yards and yards of fabric, whenever I am forced into prewashing, I can't get out all the wrinkles. |
I don't wash kits or precuts... If a fabric is questionable, take a damp white cloth and gently rub the fabric, it color shows on the rag, I would replace that fabric or send the kit back.

The ONLY fabric I ever had run on me was from Connecting Threads. I love their fabric but from now on I WILL prewash their stuff!

I never wash kits. For other fabric I do a strip test. I cut off a strip 1" wide and wash it.

Thanks everyone, this particular fabric is all pale shades, with even some white. I think I'll pass on this one & see what happens. I don't think it will be a problem if I don't prewash any including the backing,it will all be treated the same. I just needed some encouragement.
However, after what you said Mamagus I think I will prewash another kit I have which has some reds in it. Those may run and it's from Connecting Threads also. |

Which kit are you doing? I'm working on a welcome wallhanging kit from Connecting Threads. I love their fabric.

I have this same kit on order and hope to get it this week. I can't wait to see how yours turns out. I love their kits and fabrics.

To me it's easier to be one way or the other.. I always pre-wash just to weed out that one fabric that could ruin my quilt.
If I wash all my fabric then when I get a piece out of my stash I know that all my fabric is the same. I do wash all the backing fabric and dry it, because it is such a large single piece. I am more afraid of that shrinking than a 2 1/2 inch square. I know some people feel one way is better than the other, but I think it's more important to figure out which side you want to be on and do all your fabric the same way. That makes sense to me, does it to you?? |
