I do pre-check my darker reds, blues and purple and only had a problem with one dark navy. I prefer the starch already on the fabric when piecing. I have read and heard that you are not suppose to wash charms or jelly roils because you won't have the size or width after drying.

You may want to consider checking ANY and ALL intensely colored fabrics - including yellows. I had a Moda yellow spill color. Interestingly enough, the dark red, dark brown, and dark green pieces from the same line seemed to be color fast.

I pre wash everything. Smaller pieces go into lingerie bags. Been awhile though since I purchase precuts. Too much not right sized usually smaller than stated. Everything gets washed before it goes into my stash.

I wash everything. I only bought one jelly roll and one layer cake, but I did wash those by hand, spin them in a garment bag and hang to dry. I was still able to use them; the jelly roll did not shrink appreciably in width, and the layer cake pieces were being cut anyway. I have two kits that I haven't made yet, but I do intend to wash those pieces when the time comes.

I prewash, but only yardage. Jelly rolls, layer cakes, charm packs will ravel too much if washed in a washing machine, plus the jelly rolls will wrap around each other. If a kit comes pre-cut, then, no, I don't launder it. If it's all yardage, then it's washed and dried before I use it.

I take yardage out of the dryer, fold it, mark it's measurement and then fold it up for storage.
It is ironed when I am ready to use it.

I only prewash red. So far that has worked for me.

I prewash everything including precuts. Either lingerie bag or swish in sink then use a salad spinner & lay them out on the counter to dry.
