Pricing material for yard sale!
 

Good morning to you and quick question! My niece just messaged me on fb, wants me to go help her price some material that her hubby's grandmother left behind for a yard sale. I have no idea, maybe like a $1.00 a yd. or so much for a box full or what. Need some advice! And thanks!

Yard sales can get very hectic and you certainly won't have time to measure out pieces during the sale if you price it by the yard. That will also give the impression that you will cut. No, don't price it by the yard. I would bundle it in clear zip lock bags price so much per bag, no substitutions, no taking something out of one bag and putting it with another. $1 per yard is more than fair so if you want you can fill the bags with 5 yards of fabric and price them at $5 per bag.

If you have blends and polys and all different stuff I would price it less than that. Really the only buyers you will get for fabric are quilters and crafters and most of us prefer cotton but if you have a mixed bag with 6 or 7 yards of fabric and not all is cotton it should still sell at only $5 per bag.

I have been to estate/yard sales that will fold the yardage and use masking tape to bundle it and price is on the tape. less than the plastic ziplock bag. if it is small pieces the bag works as well. If it is good cotton fabric is does go for a bit more than $1.

DON"T use masing tape...please use blue painter's tape...it will come off without residue.

They do the same thing around here...use enough tape to go around it twice...it stops people from opening it a bit.

The best way I found for garage sales is to do it by weight. That way no one has to measure anything or have people mad because you shorted them or the fabric had a chunk out of it. One sale had $2 per pound. A yard is around 5 ounces so depending on quality and how fast she wants to sell it, you can go to $5 a pound for the good stuff. This is the same whether scraps, or bags of scraps, fat quarters or yardage. It helps the sale go fast. You need a scale or two, lots of bags and then weigh the bags and that is it.

Have big and clear signs all over or you will get a lot of questions. Have it on the sign how much a yard weighs so they can figure out if a good deal themselves. Have space where people can stack their stuff while going thru the fabric and have a lot of bags. Even grocery sacks are fine.

The best part of this is that scraps sell too. I love scraps and love filling bags. If you dont know if kits are complete or dont want to deal with kits she has set up and you dont want to go thru them, sell them by the pound also.

Then all you have to price is books, magazines, and notions/tools.

If there is a name on the selvage, I would put them together, and price them more. No name on the selvage should be less. Groups wrapped in painter's tape is a good idea, it makes it harder for the yardsalers to rip apart what they want. When you advertise, put in the words quilting fabric?, will bring alot of people out and your sale will be a success.

on long island we usually charge $1 per yard or if there is more fabric than you can handle, it was $5 fill the bag.

For the good cotton- why not let talk to her and see if you can sell it to us on the board first.

What doesn't sell can go to the garage sale.

Certainly depends on the type of fabric. Some very old pieces in good condition are sought after, and will thus bring more. Cotton blends, you will be lucky to get anyone to take them. If there are a lot of nice pieces, put that in your garage sale ad and it will draw people to your sale, and they will no doubt look and probably purchse other non quilting items good luck
