Problem with Bernina 770QE !

I turned on my Bernina 770 tonight and it worked fine. I was going to use the letters stitch to put a name on what I was sewing. I was having trouble saving it and just used the thread cutter to stop and go back to regular sewing. The thread cutter did not cut the top thread for some reason. So when I attempted to do a straight stitch the needle did not move and I noticed the feed dogs were stuck in the down position. Opened the bobbin case and after taking everything out found threads stuck on the back wall hooks. Took them all off and oiled and cleaned everything and put it back together and the bobbin moved fine and the feed dogs came up into their normal position. So went to straight stitch again and the needle will still not move. I can move the hand wheel and it turns fine and when it does the bobbin moves and the feed dogs move. The pressure foot goes up and down also. My needle arm does not though. It just sits there even though the thread take up lever moves up and down like it should. I can take a hold of the needle clamping screw and move the needle arm up and down just fine but it does not move when I sew. It's almost like something came disconnected. Guess I might have to take it apart and see???
Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong. I cannot take it in for repair as our state is on lock down/quarantine right now and our quilt shop is not open except for online sales. I'm supposed to be making protective masks for medical friends and now I have to deal with this temperamental thing.

Were you in an embroidery mode at first?

Do you need to reset your machine to “ sewing”.

Make sure the bobbin case is seated into the machine correctly.

Are you using a foot pedal? You may need to disconnect it and then reconnect the foot pedal.

Is the needle plate cover on correctly?

Just a few things to check.

Can you e-mail the dealer? Even if you can't take it in, perhaps their service person can give you things to try.

Since you interrupted the embroidery, did you clear the memory? I don’t have that model but maybe it is still in the embroidery sequence? If your machine is still under warranty, opening it yourself will void the warranty.

I was never in embroidery mode. I have sewing mode where stitches are letters do you can write things. So I never left sewing mode.

I will try giving the owner a call tomorrow as she has been in the shop working. Maybe she can get the repair guy to call me or give me his email. Was just hoping to avoid that but probably can’t.

I was never in embroidery mode. The letters are stitches offered as a stitch on the machine. I tried the plate, redoing the bobbin completely and made sure all cords were fully plugged in. Was gonna take the cover off tonight but can’t find a screwdriver to fit it! Probably some specialty tool you need with my luck. Thanks for the suggestions.

HB has one that we have used on my 440QE.

I have that machine but not the embroidery module. I sure hope you can get help on the phone. Now is not the time to be out a machine!
Let us know and good luck!

Were you in a fmq mode before trying to do letters?

What is the tension setting?

Do you happen to have a "lock" button on the machine? It may have been pressed on by accident. You may not have this feature on your machine so disregard.

Good luck!

I personally would not try to open such a high end machine. Some warranties can be in jeopardy. The (Janome) shop I worked in saw many machines opened and then people were unable to get them back together. Definitely call your shop.

Does your foot correspond to the stitch plate you are using? The machine will not stitch if it thinks you will hit the stitch plate. Just a thought.

umm...I have one of the new 570's and they are fickle....ok...not fickle...but smarter then me.....they don't let things happen that can damage your machine...more then once....I have been frustrated because my machine would not sew only to find I was in programming mode or had not selected the right foot, stitch plate, or needle in the left column on the machine....I assume you have already turned the machine off for a bit and then turned it back on? Just double check all those settings...took me a while to get the hang of making this machine stitch!

SusieQOH 03-28-2020 06:17 AM

I agree. My 770QE is a lot smarter than me.

Have you checked to see if the needle up/down button will work? If it works, then something else is the problem. It sounds odd and frustrating. I know the screen on my machine is so sensitive, and random touch will change a setting. I would also go into the settings and change that particular setting and then see if anything changed. Then set it back to your setting. Good luck....

Yes I checked that and all is well.

You need a degree to work these computerized sewing machines now days. I think I’ve had all the basics figured out for awhile though so no idea what this could be. Luckily it waited till I got done with a quilt, blanket, bibs, burp clothes and onesies for a new grand baby though! Maybe it was just tired.

Thanks I checked and the needle up/down button does not work either. Checked all settings and everything seems to be set. Guess I’ll call for repair! Thanks.
