When I use my rotary cutter, my ruler tends to move a little, so precision in strip piecing is a problem. How do you keep your ruler from moving while you are cutting? Is there something I can adhere to the back of my rulers? TIA

Yes, they sell a non slip vinyl that is self adhering to the rulers and it is WONDERFUL :D:D:D I have it on all of mine now. I can still move the ruler on the fabric, but when I apply pressure to it, it stays in place much better!!!
Mine is called Invis a Grip, there is enough of it in the package to take care of many rulers. It doesn't have to go completely to the edge, I left it 1/2" in all of the way around the edges.

A few spots of glue from your hot glue gun will do.

They also have some that are like little round pieces of sandpaper that work really well also!! I have both!!

Thanks for the suggestion. I just found several websites that sell the Invisa-GRIP. It should help me a lot!

When I started using a rotary cutter I had big problems with my ruler slipping. I was cutting nasty squares and nasty slices in my fingers.
I treated myself to a June Taylor-Shape Cut 12" at Walmart.
It has been the answer to my having accurate (blood missing) squares. I would love to have a larger one so I don't have so many folds in the fabric. If you get one, go the largest size they offer. It will pay for itself with one mis-cut on an expensive fabric.
Good luck.

The Invisi-Grip makes a world of difference. I've put it on all my rulers.
Also, when cutting try to keep one finger (usually the pinky) on the fabric
to hold the ruler in place.

I have never had a problem with mine. But all here sounds like good advice.

This isn't a slipping problem but I have a questions about rulers. My rulers have a film like glare on them. Not the clear film you can buy, but a film from using them. Does anyone know what is the best thing to clean the back of them? I am sure it is just from using them so much but it would be nice to have them clear again.

Someone turned me on to Nexcare Flexible Clear Tape that is used for bandages. You put a piece on the back side of your ruler. It doesn't leave an icky residue if you decide to take it off.

I bought sandpaper with adhesive backing and just cut some pieces to put on my rulers to keep them from slipping. Works very well.

I have the Nexcare clear tape, so I will give it a try. Also, I bought your How to Make a Doll Quilt and am excited to start it soon. Haven't made a doll quilt since the Carter administration. Your booklet explained everything very clearly!

You are too kind Joeysnana. I hope you will join us in the Doll Quilt Swaps.

I have heard so many people use these little dots. I think that I should get some too.

I need to get some of this. What a great tip.

My favorite is the Invis-a-grip on all the rulers
Second is the small sand paper circles.
least favorite are the small round clear plastic dots. They are too thick.

A few weeks ago I got desperate and was having slipping problems with really little templates. I grabbed my quilters wax used for thread when hand quilting and I rubbed it onto the back of the template. Boy does that work well. You can put it just where you want it to go and it sticks without leaving any goo at all.

I use the little sandpaper dots. For the smaller rulers I place a dot at each corner. For my larger rulers, I place one at each corner and in the middle so the ruler is balanced out when I walk my fingers up the ruller as I am cutting.
My quilt teacher taught me that little trick. As your cutter moves up the ruler, walk your fingers up the ruler (away from where you are cutting) so as to keep it in place. Also, she taught me to place my cutter down on the mat and come at the ruler edge from a slight angle and continue that up the ruler. I have yet to damage a ruler or cut my fingers.

A lot of good advice...thanks!

I went to Lowe's today looking for the sandpaper dots but couldn't find them. My husband gave me some adhesive sandpaper so I cut out little squares and adhered them to the rulers. Where do you find those sandpaper dots?
