I read somewhere this one lady put some of her UFO's in baggies/bags and put a receipents name on it. After she dies those bags go to aformentioned people. They in turn think how nice she thought of me, in reality it could be payback of some type.

Iluv2quilt 02-05-2011 08:31 AM

lol, how funny :D

Lannie 02-05-2011 09:17 AM

I've been the receipient of several ufo's from the area freecycle list. One dubbed the world's ugliest, but I'm learning a lot by finishing up these projects someone gave up on.

LOL .... I'm new to this hobby and I'm quickly learning how to use a seam ripper. A couple ladies who are seasoned in our group were having at it on Wednesday ripping away at things they had started stitching, cussing the whole time they were. :-)

Chocolate martini...haven't had one of those in years, and had forgotten that it is the perfect blend of alcohol and chocolate. Too bad I live in a dry county!

Seriously, I have a UFO from the '80s that I pulled out of the box last year. Loads of mistakes in it, and I decided to leave all of them in but one. There was just too much sashing on one row and it looked like it was gathered! So I fixed that, but left in all the miscut blocks and errant points. What was I thinking (or drinking) when I decided to hand quilt the thing, I cannot tell you. I just need more of it now!

BTW, socks join in on the conspiracy!

LOL!

Ladies, rather than throw them out, I have a couple of suggestions:

1) Let's have a UFO swap. Those wishing to receive a UFO can announce our intention, and senders can contact us via PM for our addresses. Recipients have no choice in what we receive. Once we receive it, we can do something with it, or pass it on to a new recipient. The only thing we cannot do is to return it to the original sender. The first sender has the option of being a receiver or not. She may just run screaming from the mention of any other UFOs.

2) Sew them together in any way at all, and them cut them up for bindings.

What do y'all think? I am willing to receive.

pollyjvan9 02-05-2011 10:25 AM

I've been known to throw those pieces in the scrap bag instead of putting them back in the UFO stack!

aggiebears 02-05-2011 12:28 PM

I found a cross stitch project the other day. It has handprints inked on the fabric. The handprints are of my nephew when he was a baby (months old) he is only 20 now.

seamstome 02-05-2011 12:43 PM

So at least one of you thinks the UFO's reproduce in the dark. I am there with you.

I TRY to only have one project at a time but sometimes you hit a wall. Fabric problems, ability issues, dont like the project, etc. I have 9 UFO's right now. That isnt projects that havent been started ;) which is another subject.

I decided I am going start fitting them into my quilting schedule alternating them with a new project, with hopes to have most of them cleaned up this year. Most are laps, one twin, one king, one purse and one little wallhanging.

Ritacarl 02-05-2011 02:11 PM

I cut out the pieces just the way the pattern said. Tried to piece the star together and there was no way it was going to work. My daughter came, who is good at figuring out stuff, and she couldn't either. I have a box that jas all this kind of stuff goes into. Someday I will take all the pieces that I have cut a tad to shy, the star pieces I can't get together and other pits and pieces and make something. Not sure what tho. That's my UFO.

CircleSquare 02-05-2011 02:55 PM

A couple of years ago, my guild had a UFO swap. We were to take the UFO we received and make SOMETHING out of it, even if it was a postcard or a tote bag, and then return it to the original giver. It was such fun!

CircleSquare 02-05-2011 02:57 PM

Sometimes I take all the pieces of a ufo and put in a zip lock bag and put it on the free table at guild meetings. If I have a pic of the original project, or the pattern, I include that, in case someone wants to actually finish it. Otherwise, they can use it for something else.

MerryQuilter 02-05-2011 04:32 PM

I have some large UFO's that I still love but they talk to me and tell me how they want to be hand quilted so they stay in their tote, until???

Quiltaddict 02-05-2011 04:47 PM

I have some UFO's that I do intend to finish and some that I do not like how they are looking at all, but can't seem to give them up after all the work I did on them. Someday, maybe. In the meantime, there are dozens of ideas for new quilts running around in my head.

Don't torture yourself with UFOs.

biscuitqueen 02-05-2011 07:16 PM

last year i found some odds and ends put them all in a plastic bag and wrote (white elephant) on them for christmas this year, for our quilt group.

PKITTY1 02-05-2011 07:41 PM

I can't manage the seam ripper and the wine glass at the same time so I put the thing away and go look for chocolate.

PKITTY1 02-05-2011 07:44 PM

Sorry...one more thing about UFOs? How do they multiply so fast??? And where do the instructions go??? If I can figure out these questions and the one about where the matching sock goes in the dryer, I will consider my life fulfilled...lol:)

jojosnana 02-05-2011 09:03 PM

I have to get these UFOs under control. I am trying so hard to do them one at a time......

Now that's a great idea!

I'm going on a quilt retreat in a couple of weeks and the first two projects I am going to work on are UFO's. I am determined to finish these two. One is a quilt top that is all pieced just needs about 6 figures fused and machine appliqued. The other is a block of the month that I bought at least 12 years ago. Wish me luck.

stitchingcrazy 02-06-2011 12:14 AM

I agree. Why is it that when we get distressed with a project, put it away, in a plastic bag, and not think about putting some clue inside as to how to finish it or what it was? A page number , pattern info, magazine date and page, anything. We only have ourselves to blame. It's weird how much alike we all are. People gathering here from all over the world doing the same things. Mind blowing.

cheryl rearick 02-06-2011 09:06 AM

lol, I haven't reached that point yet. Still building my stash. Have fun folks.... :) If someone was not smiling when they first come to this quilt board for sure they are before they leave. I love the wonderful warm humor generated in these rooms. Blessings all :)

My UFO problem isn't that one. Since I design almost all of my quilts, there is never a kit or instructions issue. However, it is not uncommon that when I start on a UFO, I've used one fabric for something else. Last week, I decided it was time to finish this quilt, but could not find the border fabric. I had bought all the quilt store had and used it in a couple other projects. Then, while looking for a part of another UFO, I found it. By then, of course, I'd bordered and quilted it. Yugh!

I misplaced the binding on one of my UFO's I want to finish for the UFO challenge. Now I need to find something else that will work. The funniest thing is that I cut and pieced it from stash fabric in one day in 2003. It is a big goose on a pond block that was either in QM or QN. Saw it, pieced it, and then got stuck on the machine quilting, so it has been flying in space ever since. Moved two times and don't remember seeing the fabric on the last move.

chichimamma 02-06-2011 07:40 PM

Yeah I have UFO'S my daughter brought over from my house (married now still own house DD lives there)in a bag of my GGMA'S quilts and there in the bottom was a quilt top I had done and forgotten-that sure is a funny feeling when you don't really remember putting it together, I remembered the fabric though.

Annz 02-06-2011 09:21 PM

I also look at them and wonder why and put them back in the protective bag because I will revisit them someday. :-P

giannina 02-07-2011 07:10 AM

Excuse my ignorance, I am new at this, but what is a UFO? Could someone answer me? Thank you.

biscuitqueen 02-07-2011 12:00 PM

UFO=unfinished object of any kind. we are trying to finish one every month. That doesnt mean however you can finish as many as you like and then you post them on the board so that we can ooooooooo and aaaaaaaaaaaaaa

giannina 02-07-2011 07:34 PM

Thank you so much! All of the abbreviations are driving me nuts. There has to be a dictionary somewhere.
Had to laugh, my house is full of UFOs. Just retired and discovered the joy of quilting. Don't know when will all of my UFO be completed. Will have to live for many years.
