Are you a process person or a project person, or somewhere in the middle?

I am a process person. I LOVE breaking the quilting prep into all the individual steps and then I check them off as I go. I don't really care if the project gets finished as longf as I enjoy the process (which is why I generally work towards committed dates or events).

My girl friend is a project person. Her goal is being DONE and she may even skip the fine detail in the prep work just to get to the finish line.

How about you?

Process, and so much so that getting done at all is a challenge! But the process is fun!

I am a project person. Like a lot of other things in my life I do the process part on automatic pilot so I can get to the parts I like the most.
As a child my siblings, who were all boys and I used to fight nightly over who did the dishes etc. Now when it comes to necessary chores I just do it. Obsessing over the less interesting details only takes the pleasure out of the finished product.

I am a project person! I get bored with the necessary parts and start to procrastinate-play computer games when I should be working!!
I am always excited when I get done and get to see the finished project in my case a hotpad or keychain or checkbook cover. I love to see that what I had envisioned has come to life. But the tedious steps I struggle with!

I love the process. I enjoy every step of it. But, I do love to have a project done and move to a new one. (or finish a past one)

I'm a process person. Sometimes I feel let down when I finish. Cause then I have to plan another. It's like now what??

Definitely a Process Person. I love the shopping, the color coordinating, the cutting, the measuring, the sewing, the quilting. Especially the shopping. :O)

I like the process, or I wouldn't try to make quilts ... on the other hand, I can never get enough projects to try to make myself produce more.

It looks to me like I am a process person ... or <g> maybe I am just the hunter/gatherer type who likes to get the stuff in case I ever get time to work on the projects and the process.

i must be a process person.I LOVE the organinzing, cutting sewing of it all..but then again...i am thrilled to have it done so I can get to the next one.

I guess I should have added that as a third option, lol. Yes, I know the hunting and gathering well, as my rather substatial stash suggests.

The good news there: we will never be cold!

I've also made a memorial type wall hanging when a friend lost her little girl to cancer. While I was making it I realised I had no idea what I was going to do with the end product, it was purely the making of it that was therapeutic for me. The process was part of the healing. I did end up giving it to my friend, and she loved it.

Process, definitely.

I'm famous for finding the "perfect" block pattern for a project, finding all the "perfect" fabrics on my shelf, figuring out the "perfect" quilting design, laying them all out together to find the "perfect" arrangement... And then moving on to the next "perfect" project! :lol:

My knitting suffers the same fate: I'll get the back and one sleeve of a sweater done and lose all interest for a year or so. When enough time has passed, I'll pick it up as "new" and be enthusiastic about finishing it again.

Methinks I have "startitis" -- I love to start new projects (knitting or quilting) but will drop them once I hit the first snag. It drives my DH crazy since he's the exact opposite. He's slow to start a project, but once he does -- he works until it's finished (and it's usually beautiful, to boot).

If only life were without snags......

I actually work well when the proverbial feces hits the proverbial fan. I love a good challenge and trying to finnagle the details (may be my drafting background comes through). I sometimes just get bored with the mundane.

I think I fall into the process category. I love all aspects of quilting, from start to finish. I'm meticulous and don't hesitate to rip out and redo. I refuse to have a deadline. This is just my own personal bar though. I love all quilts as a finished product, no matter how humble or stunning.

To me it's all about the hand quilting. I hate cutting out, don't mind the machine piecing, but I like it best when I am putting a new quilt top into my floor frame. I love the weeks of hand quilting! Don't know which category I would fall in? Although I do enjoy the planning of a new quilt top! And sitting down in the floor with my stash spread out around me is also fun! Ninnie in NC

I used to enjoy the hand quilting part of the process the most - couldn't get to that part fast enough. Can't hand quilt any more, so I bought an embroidery Pfaff + 4D to design machine quilting. I have a hard time having more than 1 project going at a time - obsess about finishing 'this' one before I start 'that' one. Strangely, for me, I am almost finished with twin baby quilts, have a bed-size crumb quilt layered and ready to quilt, and have another top finished. VERY unusual. This came about because DD brought sacks of old clothes to my house last summer and said ,'This is to take your mind off your BC and chemo. Please make quilts for us for the coming winter.' I actually finished 2, and I brought the other 2 to Tucson to finish. Then my friend's DDIL had twins - - -

I saw an article recently in my French 'Quiltmania' magazine about memorial quilts. The lady featured made them out of fabric from the loved ones clothes, scarves, ties or whatever. She described exactly the emotion you refer to, Blue, that the process of making it was part of the healing. It's a wonderful application of our hobby and makes me wish I'd thought of it a few years ago when my beloved Grandma died - I'd have kept some of her clothes and made one. Unfortunately, my aunt packed everything off to a charity shop, I only managed to salvage her paisley scarf which she wore round her shoulders or over her head, depending on the weather.

I think I'm a 'project person' but trying to make myself more process - I have to remind myself that this is a HOBBY and is supposed to be fun! I'm getting better at not beating myself up if I don't finish something for ages, or if I get bored with something and put it away for a while. DH doesn't really get it either - he said to me this morning ' what happened to that crazy quilt you were making?' I've done two blocks, (by hand and hand embroidered - took ages!). I will make more now and then, WHEN I FEEL LIKE IT!!! But there's no point in MAKING yourself do something just because you feel it MUST be finished, right? How am I doing at becoming a 'process person'? :D

I guess I am more a process person. I like organizing and getting ready. Although it is fun when it is finally done.

I am as I said before a project person. But my favorite part is the designing! I spend hours developing ideas on my EQ5 and most of them may never become anything but Ilove to play with the colors and the "what if I do this?"
I get bogged down in sewing the blocks together but once i get past that I enjoy adding the sashing and borders and finishing the project. Course I don't do big quilts that take a lot of time like you all do If I had to concentrate on a big quilt I would never get it done! I would get bored too quick.
Speaking of which I do have lap size quilts for my twin grandsons that should get done........ another day :D :D :D

What gets me off track is the adjusting - redos-- I HATE to tear out and redo!

Hm, it sounds like there is another category: project person with niche interests (pockets of process joy- :wink:)

actually i love all of it - the getting the stuff together, cutting, sewing, and finishing - - - i hate having ufo's sitting around so i try to control myself and do that rarely.

I love the creative part, where you are thinking of an idea, looking at fabrics, patterns, thinking of the intended recipient and what they would like.

I love the prewashing and pressing of all the lovely fabrics, seeing them all stacked and ready to cut.

I love the cutting and piecing. I love laying all the blocks out and imagining the finished product. I love putting the quilt top together.

I hate the basting. Bleah. Hurts my knees. On my next quilt, my aunt has promised to teach me how to do it on the frame instead of on the floor.

I love the hand quilting. However, I have found myself starting another quilt in between quilting, to give my back a break. I think it would be lovely to be able to put the next one on the frame as soon as I take this one off.

I think it is the process that I love. I have done lots of types of needlework, and I used to only love the project when finished. But I have come to realize as I have gotten older that the process is the part I love. It is better, because now I don't stress over those unfinished projects. I no longer care!
