such a beautiful quilt. what a shame, i'm thinking wall quilt.

This quilt obviously meant a lot to your DGD, so I would ask her opinion on what she wants. The original was beautiful and I think several of the original blocks could be incorporated in that. Be sure and include the story in the label along with the picture. So sorry for her material losses and having to start over again, but as you attest, things can be replaced. So glad they were all right.

Tartan's idea is an excellent one. I suffered an apartment fire several years ago, and I found the best thing to wash clothes or other washables in was baking soda. It is a very gentle cleaner and will also help to remove the smokey smell. Wash on gentle cycle with a soaking period. You may find after the wash that you have more to work with than you think!

I think Jan's idea is a very good one. Then you could put any information on the back of the frame. I hope you can get the smell of smoke out. Thank goodness no one was injured in the fire. The destruction caused by fire is so devastating.

I like your idea, Jan!

I think a wall hanging or pillows from the parts of the quilts that could be saved. A touching story, I am sorry for their loss, but I was touched by the love that your DGD had for the quilt that you made for her. I hope she and her family can begin again after this tragedy and put it behind them.

Just an off the wall suggestion, what about making a big teddy bear so she can have him tell the story of the quilt that survived the fire to become a lovable friend made be a wonderful friend.

how heartbreaking to have all of your things destroyed in a fire...but they are things and can be replaced. I am glad everyone is okay. Whatever is made from the quilt and I am sure it will be cherished.

How about a photo of the first quilt to hang (it is a brave little quilt after all) and use the older one for a double sided throw pillow to match the new one, and if there is enough useable left, how about a small purse to carry?
