I bought some fusible batting from JoAnn's that is very heavy and makes a great bottom for purses when sandwiched between 2 pieces of material.

That's what I do. Often you can fnd some even at close-out prices...odd ones that didn't sell with the groups.

Go to an xray place and ask if they will give you the plastic that the xray plates come packed in. It's very stiff and they usually throw it out. You will need very sharp scissors to cut it.
I'm in Australia so not sure if it's the same in other countries.

I used cake decorating boards. :-o

Rann 05-10-2011 03:30 PM

The form board works best for me and so light weight, Marcie

I rip the plastic covers off of 3-ring binders and use the cardboard that is on the inside. I will be loading up on used binders in a few weeks because I teach high school and kids will soon be doing their end-of-year locker cleanout! It's absolutely amazing what they throw away!

My hubby has made them for me out of left over paneling. They work great.

angiecub 05-10-2011 04:40 PM

I used a double layer of plastic canvas in my mini bow tuck. Works great and is also very inexpensive.

I sew a sleeve & slip in 2 layers of plastic canvas & stitch up the end. All washable like that

asmmauer 05-10-2011 06:30 PM

I use foam core board.Cut it with utility knife and make a fabric sleeve for it so if necessary i can remove and wash .

Stitchit123 05-10-2011 06:53 PM

I use the corragated plastic cardboard Its light weight and Lord knows if every thing but the kitchen sink is in there you don't need extra unnecessary weight

newbiequilter 05-10-2011 07:21 PM

I use the plastic canvas in a "sleeve". I figure that way, if the recipient of the bag forgets to remove the bag bottom, it is washable.

Edogirl 05-10-2011 08:07 PM

I use the covers of my old college binders

Exactly what I do and it seems to work a treat.

dunster 05-10-2011 10:43 PM

I just finished a big bag that didn't call for any stiffener in addition to the heavy-weight fusible that was used throughout, on both the outside and the lining pieces.

ConnieF 05-11-2011 01:08 AM

plastic canvas is my fave for it is light in wt. Sometimes I use two layers and I make a sleve to go over it the size that just fits into the bottom of the bag. For one of my big wide totes was the width of an empty bolt of fabric and dh taped two tog it was great

frarose 05-11-2011 01:30 AM

Some great ideas.

I use form board for the Dollar Store. Just cut it to fix whatever bottom size you need. Plus, you can make many for just $1.00

BellaBoo 05-11-2011 06:47 AM

I buy sample lengths of the laminate wood flooring at Lowes that snaps in place. The discontinued laminate, the samples will be free. It gives a solid bottom with no added weight.

Campbell34 05-11-2011 08:45 PM

One layer of plastic Canvas is plenty, I have made lots of purses and the cancas is perfect

heberstitcher 05-12-2011 12:56 PM

I use Foam Board and cover it with fabric. You can get it at Walmart by the poster board. It is about 1/4" thick and you can easily cut it to the size you need.

I cover a piece of plastic canvas with fabric. It works brilliantly and is washable.

I use a spare rotary cutter and mat to cut it.
It gives just enough stiffness to the bottom of the purse.
I make a sleeve for it so it can be removed when washing the purse.
I bought mine at Hobby Lobby, the cost was 99 cents.
Don't remember the size but I have made six Bow Tuck purses so far and still have enough for at least four or five more.

Blessings,
Sandi

I used ply wood DH cut to size for me. I made a pouch for it and placed the panel in the bottom so I can remove it when the bag needs washing. I don't make many bags but I needed something strong to hold everything I need for when I go on bus trips. It is a lot easier than taking a backpack all the time. I have put 4 outside pockets and 2 inside pockets so the bag can hold a lot of things in it.

Faiwee 05-18-2011 07:35 PM

I use foam core and wrap it with press 'n seal to protect it from water. I make a cover from lineing fabric and place it in the bottom of the bag.

montanajan 05-18-2011 07:39 PM

I like Timtex, but the price of craft plastic sheets or dollar store placemats cannot be beat!
