These are the pincusions I use. They're fairly large (the bottom is as round as my palm), stand about 3" high. They never tip. You can stick pins in the top, or the sides if your aim is off :)

One caution- if you make any out of the walnut shells and decide to give/sell them, make sure the receiver knows they contain nut shells. As someone who grew up with a severe peanut allergy I am very sensitive to how dangerous that can be. Even just the shells! Luckily I outgrew my nut allergy in my late 30's but still swell up like a tick around anyone who owns a cat.

I knit my pincushions using wool -- not only do they hold my pins, they hold my seam ripper, scissors and on occasions my knitting needles. I would post a photo, but cannot since I upgraded to 8.1

I make wool pin cushions from felted wool yarn and I make pin cushions filled with emery sand. I love the emery ones. They are heavy and pins love emery.

I also use a mechanics magnetic bowl and I love it. Never get stuck with a pin and also toss my machine screwdriver in there as well so I can always find it. Using aincushion just doesn't work for me

I like the tomato because it sharpens my pins better than anything else. I made some with emery/sand that I found at the hardware store, but the grit leaks out through the thread fibers. Not happy with that mess. I'm allergic to dust!
