Puzzle box pattern--set in seams?
 

Has anyone done Tracey Brookshier's Puzzle Box pattern? I thought it might be good for my sister, a new quilter, to use on some large-pattern fabric she bought...but looking at it online, I can't see how it's done unless there are set-in (Y) seams...and my sister is NOT going to go for that.

Anyone done this pattern? Are there set-in seams?

Thanks but neither of those is what she's looking for--the fabric she has needs to be the focus, as the print is in the pictures I've seen of Puzzle Boxes. Those others are very easy, but have too many distracting other fabrics.

The fabric she has would be great for Attic Windows but she's not interested in something that complex. Puzzle Boxes implies it's simple piecing...but looks like it has set in seams in the corners.

You know, I made that once, and I was a pretty new quilter, and I don't recall it being hard…in fact I think you could do it with partial seams and it would be pretty easy:

The borders would be the two fabrics already sewn together, if that makes sense...

To me it also looks like the partial seems technique is used for this pattern. I did a block using that technique quite a few years ago as a newer quilter and it is very easy to do. Watch the video that willferg linked to and you will see how easy it is. Your sister should have no problem with it once she does one block to see how it works. And yes, it is a great block design for large print fabrics.

since i wasn't familiar with it. i have not done that particular pattern, but did do something similar using partial seams. was not that difficult at all.

Partial seams are not the same thing as Y or set-in seams. Partial seams are quite easy. Go for it!

In both of these quilts, I used 3 fabrics.

I did the pink quilt using a pattern that was called Around the Block, that is very similar to Warm Wishes in 3 colors using the same focus fabric instead of a lot of different ones.

The other quilt, red & blues, is the original BQ quilt pattern. It was by far the easiest quilt I ever made. I cut it out one afternoon. Then sewed it together the next day and had it on the long arm the next day and I am not exactly fast with sewing.

Edited to add: Sorry, I forgot about the white stopper border on the pink quilt, so I used 4 fabrics in it.

I was in my mid 30s or early 40s before I ever saw another Hallie even mentioned--that was in a Reader's Digest story. Halle Berry doesn't count because she spells it wrong. :-)

Then, my nephew's high school graduating class had TWO Hallies last May. Go figure!
