Hello all talented quilters.
I am trying to follow this site http://quiltingpassion.com/tutorials/HST/hst.html to make HST and QST.

For HST, it says to add an inch to the finished size block using the two squares thing. But it doesn't say how to calculate for the QST.

So my question, if I want to end up with 4.5'' QST, what sizes squares do I start with to form the HST and then to the QST. Is it 6.5'' squares, which end up being 5.5'' HST and then 4.5" QST? Does this sound right? I feel my brain bubbling :!:

I love this site, and I think I'll use the addition of 7/8''and 1/4'' seam, instead of the one inch with the scant 1/4'' seam for the HST.
Ooh, this method is going to save me time and hopefully help me get my points right:)

I knew you do it. I have to have a cheap sheet pinned by my cutting table so I can make sure I always these little rules..

I personally prefer to allow 1" over, for a 1/2 square triangle, then square it up. But for a 1/4 square triangle you allow 1 1/4, (I personally round up to 1 1/2), cut your first 1/2 sq. triangle, cut, press open, put opposite colors together and then mark,sew for your next 1/2 sq. triangle, cut, press, you now have a quarter square triangle, then square up to the desired size.

Since writing this tute I have figured out the size of the swatches. Measure from the center of your template to the corner and add a seam allowance. for the long swatch you can measure from corner to corner across your template and add at least a seam allowance on each end.

These can be made in any size just use the size template you need.
