QST help needed
 

How should I cut out & sew the marked section of this block. I've marked the section in question with a red arrow. It seems to be an hour-glass variation.

The block is an Ohio Star Variation that I want to use in a lapquilt I'm making for hubby as a gift. It will be red and white.

I really don't want to use a template for the modified sections.

My first idea is to make a reqular sized hour-glass block and just cut it down to size. A waste of fabric, but I can't see another way besides templates or paper-piecing.

I thought maybe some of you would be share how you would go about making this section of the block. Btw, it's to be a red/white quilt. I just used these colors in EQ7 to count my pieces.

I havenot seen this variation. If this is how you want it to look, you may try paper piecing it. use a grid the size you want finished and try to go from there. Jenny Doan has a video and quilter's cache has a pattern. But they're the actual pattern Not a variation. Someone else may come up with an idea I'm sure. curious for their answers

Templates are not a big deal - honest -

I've seen a pattern once before that used this block; they made it by making a full hourglass block, and cutting it down. Wasteful, but probably the easiest way.

Yes, that was my first thought, too. Not much waste and probably the easiest and most accurate way to do it.

Paper piecing is wasteful of fabric, ink and paper so I guess just pick your poison if you don't want to piece templates.

Eleanor Burns has a video on this star. She basically makes a full QST, then cuts off the top and discards. Just like you are thinking!

I agree. Make the QST and then trim to the size required with any square up ruler. I prefer doing it the easiest way possible. Good Luck!

This looks just like a block in Star of Wonder Quilt Pattern by Acorn Quilt
You make the block and then trim it to get the asymmetrical block.
If I were a techi I would post the photo.....sorry!
