Quality flannel?
 

My son asked for a flannel quilt. If I am going to go through this effort, can you recommend a high quality flannel line? And a decent pattern. It will be well used for sleeping so will need to be strong. I understand it is going to be a pain to work with but I will do my best. I made him one when he left for college. He is now married with two kids and today told me he would love another flannel quilt. He told me he put the one I made him in a cedar chest to save because it is so threadbare. Honestley that was about 15 years ago, and I probably did not know what I was doing then!!! I even forgot I made it! Possible Christmas present.

I will be watching this thread with interest because because I have never found quality flannel that doesn't pill.

I just used flannel from Joann’s. I made a flannel and chenille baby quilt for grandson when he was born. Loved it. When he was about 9 he told me it was too short and could I make him another one. I made the same pattern and just added squares to make twin size. It has held up and he loves it. He is 12 now. I did wash and dry the flannel first. He still has the first one. It is still good.

I have purchased flannel from my LQS and from JoAnns. I go by the feel of the fabric and by the density (hold it up to the light - I try not to purchase flannel that is light weight) While I am not a pre"washer" of quilting cotton, I always wash and dry flannel because the shrink at different rates.

I have been happy with Moda flannel...yep...it is expensive but it really does hold up well....another good flannel is Maywood shadow play. Both are excellent. I would not buy flannel for a keepsake quilt at JoAnn's. Yep, I am a flannel snob. There are some other good brands also. I went to a flannel sale at JoAnns...and everything was so thin and loosely woven. I want ahead a bought a gold solid that felt thicker than most and it was cheap...and yep, it was cheap and when I washed it...it really shrunk a lot and felt even thinner than before. As flannel is so expensive, I would make a fabric conserving quilt....Like a turning twenty quilt....I made one for my nephew out of the Maywood flannels in woodsy colors....he really likes it...it was for a kingsized bed.....I had to bring it to a commercial laundry to wash it it....

So far, I have only made quilts I give away with Moda Flannel and have been very pleased. I trust Moda and when I put that much effort into a quilt, I don't want it to go threadbare, so I purchase their fabric.

I have used Joanne flannel in the quilt club I'm part of for their charity quilts (the fabric was donated). I wasn't impressed with how thin it was.

I prewash and dry on hot before I use the flannel just in case.

My favorite flannel was from Beverly's and they have closed - so I usually order from Fabric.com now because they have always provided me with quality fabric. If you get it and really don't like it they will take it back. But I only did that once. I think I have also bought from 10000Bolts, but not sure. Since I live in So. Cal. I do't use much flannel anymore.

Another vote for Moda flannel. I have used a thinner Moda & the thicker. Both worked fine & have lasted well. Turning Twenty would be a good pattern to use.

Woolies flannel by Maywood is very nice. It's a little thicker than Moda flannels, but Moda's prints are prettier. Maywood has a new line, but I can't remember the name.

I buy my flannel from Hancock of Paducah it’s great and they would have it on sale. My other go to is Marshal Dry Goods.
