sorry double post
you'll find this will fade in time, when you will just take up a project and go with it start to finish. |
I make queen and king sized and I do get bored so I give myself permission to do one week on and one week on the new one that way I get them both done and of course there is a couple of ones waiting to be started.
|
I have lots of patterns with fabric and in the end I didn't know where to start. So, I set aside one day a week to sew, picked which quilt I liked the best and started from there. In the last 12 months have done five quilts and the next one is lined up ready to start. Just do it.

We all have bits that we find hard. I think a good idea is to have maybe two projects on the go or maybe another small project as well. When you have them all at different stages it works for the different time slots you have. Maybe a hand pieced one to take with you and then maybe one at the cutting stage which you only allow yourself to do once you have done at least half of the top to another one - a reward to yourself. Then you get to sew it only when you finish the top. You get the idea I hope. You will work a system that works out for you but give yourself some fun to experiement along the way. It's all a learning process - do let yourself finsih something as it is a great feeling to admire what you have learnt when you look at your work. remember to post your work here for us to see.

I like that part too,but if I think I have to many stacking up I make a deal with myself that I can't cut or buy any more fabric until I get the pile down to nothing waiting, It just works better if you talk to yourself. Or your other opeion would be to get a partner to sew. This actually works well I've seen it done.
|
WOW ... you've got them cut already? I can't get that far. It seems I'm always adding to a group of fabrics I've separated for a project and then I just spend too much time looking at all the fabrics.
So just jump in and start sewing; I'm sure you'll be elated with the final outcomes. |
Now I think This is a Great Idea... I will have to do it

(Especially now for Christmas gift giving) Evenings are for hand sewing, binding, hand applique, etc. I really shouldn't talk, I too have 3 large boxes of ufos, but I am working on it! Yeah, right after Christmas!!!

Try cutting and piecing one block at a time?
|
I side track myself, lol. I swore I was going to put everything else aside and make dog beds, 3 of them, because I have one dachshund that chews up all the commercial stuffed beds, and I am sooooo tired of picking up stuffing. Hmmmm, so explain to me why I just got done cutting fabric and designing something else instead?
At least I pinned that design into place and took a photo before I changed my mind again, lol. So I can move it off the mat and cut the fabric for the beds in the morning....maybe? Try just picking one, putting all the rest out of sight and just start one. Good luck, lol. |
My problem is the batting lol I know it sounds crazy but I love making tops. Love picking out the backing so I really don't think about the price. When actually have to spend the money on batting, all I think about it's the functional part of the quilt, it's not pretty nor does it need to match. I buy in bulk too so it pains me to shell out the money for it....weird I know!
|
oh, yup. i hear you. i was organizing in the fabric might before last, and was shocked at how many kits i'd acquired, and how much yardage i have--all for "when i retire". there were at least three tops i'd cut out on my own, as well, just waiting to be started.
i'm going to be a busy lady when that day arrives... |

I think at one time or the other we all fall into the same thing. You just need to concentrate on the one you like the most and start to finish. I finished 12 quilts the year after I retired. I had a lot of unfinished projects!
|
Maybe that's my problem - I have 22 months until I retire!!! I'm just preparing :) You have all been wonderful, encouraging me, helping me with great suggestions and letting me know I'm not alone. (DH doesn't really understand the 'quilting thing' - but he's a sweetie anyway.) I've been blessed to find this site and join your 'world'.

We all get stuck at some time or other. I ask for help to get me started on a lap quilt I needed to finish a couple of months ago. So many great quilters encouraged me and I got a long way on it.
What worked for me was to set a day and time that I would work on the quilt. Then, no matter what, I worked on the quilt at that time and day. It worked for me!! Good luck...... just do it!! |
Not a thing wrong with you ... we all do it! One thing that work for me ... set your timer for 15 minutes and just sit down and begin sewing. If you want to stop when it rings you can, or just keep going! Either way, it gets you started!

Sounds to me like you need to go on a quilting retreat. I like to have my projects cut out and ready to go; then when I get to the retreat I just sew, sew, sew.
