I've sewn for many years, but am new (as of 01/01/10) to making quilts. I've only made 5 quilts so far, and have used Warm and Natural for each quilt.

Does everyone use quilt batting for their quilts? Or has anyone tried using a flannel sheet, or light weight blanket as batting? What are the pros and cons of doing that using a blanket (other than it being a little cheaper)?

Yes, you can use flannel, a layer of cotton fabric or no batting at all. Some call these summer quilts :D:D:D

My mom used to use old blankets for batting, her quilts were nice & warm. I have used a matress pad, it worked fine but was a little heavy. :thumbup:

You can use whatever you can afford and like to work with. I'm sure the ladies in the covered wagons were not stopping at Joann's!

You can use those, I don't because it is quite cold here.

I just backed a quilt with fleece and used no batting. It turned out great and is very warm.

I mostly use warm and natural...sometimes white and bright. Depends on the project.

You can use batting, flannel or blankets. Flannel is very nice to use for inside of wall hangings and table runners because it's flat.

so far i just use warm & natural. One of the quilting groups i am in uses a polyester batting and i don't like it at all ~ my needle falls thru it and i have a hard time getting small even stitches
