Question about binding miniature quilts

1 Attachment(s)
I have made two miniature quilts for our guild's auction. They aren't the fanciest out there, but I think they are cute and I hope someone likes them.

I'll attach a picture, in case someone wants to see them, though I probably should have waited until I finished to take a picture. I just sandwiched each and there are pins all over them. Still, the quilts show up pretty well.

Okay, my question. I have cut my binding at two inches, when I normally use 2 1/2 inches. My question is about how wide to make my seam when I sew it on. Normally I use the width of my "regular" foot on my sewing machine, but that is about a 3/8 inch seam. I am thinking that I should aim more towards 1/4 inch or even a bit smaller than that. Will that work?

I made two miniatures for our last auction, but I sure can't remember how I did this part. So, a 1/4 inch seam, right??

Thanks,
Dina

I don't have a clue, but I just wanted to say that the quilt on the right is darling! JC

I've made lots of miniatures and that is what I always used ¼" seams. Works very well. Have fun, you're doing a great job/

For binding a miniature quilt, this is what I do. I cut 1-1/4 inch strips. Do not fold in half, sew binding with 1/4 inch seam to top of quilt as usual and finish edge as usual (joining binding strips how I do it). Trim batting and backing even with edge of quilt top. Fold binding to back of quilt and fold over a small hem and blind stitch the folded edge to back covering seam line. Hope I made this pretty clear for you. Your little quilts are darling. :)

Cute minis! I would either do 1/4 inch binding or facings turned to the back.

Okay, thanks. Now I have two ways to do it!! Cool.

Nicely done!

I use a standard double fold binding and sew it on at 1/4" or less. Usually I use my 1/4" foot and shift the needle as far to the right as possible, to make it a little narrower. Doing it this way, yes, you can cut your binding less than 2-1/2" and it keeps it a little daintier for the miniature.

I have no idea about miniatures.....but just wanted to say your work is lovely.

Very cute minis. I would use 1/4".

With mini's I use a single fold binding. I cut 1-1 1/4" strips for the binding. That way the binding doesn't take over the mini.l

All wonderful ways to finish mini's. My bindings depend on how small the quilt is and often opt for the single fold 1 1/4" binding as judy363905 describes, but I press under a quarter inch on the opposite side before I attach it to the quilt; my fold under is now in place when I hand stitch it. I do use a 1/4" seam, but may trim or grade that seam before I hand stitch the binding to the back.

Dina, I normally use 2.25" for my binding so I would go down to at least 2". I did the smallest binding on my 7" mug rug cutting the double folded binding to 1.75". YIKES, it was tight but you want your binding to be in proportion to your quilt. Good Luck as always. :)

Your minis are great! I'd do a 1/4" finished binding.

I cut my strips at 2 1/4, then use 1/4 inch from the edge of my quilt. I haven't done any minatures, but I did just finish a baby quilt and the binding came out just perfect using these dimensions.

I do mine like Alikat and Judy - single fold so it's not overbearing.

Well, that is the cutest mug rug that I have ever seen!

Thanks again, everyone. I just sewed the binding on one and am in the process of quilting the second one. I even made a sleeve to add...and I hate putting sleeves on quilts, even a mini. But it is required for this auction. :)
