Question about birthing a quilt
 

I am putting together a flannel baby quilt. I have the top and back right sides together. When I put the batting on top I cannot see through it to know where to sew. Is there any reason why I couldn't sew the top and back together and then trim the backing, then spray baste the batting to the front, trim batting and then turn it inside out? I hope this makes sense.

It used to drive me crazy sewing the batting onto the top and backing. I would use wax paper on top to keep the presser foot out of the batting. It really was the reason I learned to do binding instead of birthing mu quilts.

I have birthed many table runners this fall this way-1-lay the batting on a flat surface-2-put the backing fabric right side up on top of batting-3-then lay the quilt top with right side down--4-stitch all the way around but leave a small opening to turn it right side out. Before turning right side out, trim the batting as close to the seam as you can and then trim backing and top to 1/4 to 3/8th width--turn and poke out the corners--press well and pin well before doing any quilting on it. I don't birth quilts too often. I usually do it for placemats. I do trim that batting a 1/4" on each side so that when I spray baste the batting to the top, I can barely catch a bit of batting when stitch my seam allowance. If you put it on the bottom, the backing has a tendency to show because the batting is pressing it out.

I haven't used batting for a flannel. I just use the 2 layers of flannel and sew an "x" through the squares.
