I mada a scrappy quilt and I want to wash it before I give it away my question is how many color catchers should I put in the wash?

katier825 02-08-2011 10:19 AM

I usually use one, unless there are lots of reds/purples, then i use 2.

is there a lot of bold colors in the quilt

did you use lots of hand dyed fabrics or batiks? that would be the only reason i would worry about color running all other fabrics should be very color-fast. One color catcher should be enough...but if you used hand-dyes and are concerned about it maybe toss in an extra. i always wash my finished quilts before they go out the door, have never had one run...
except of course the one my mother has...which did not run when i washed it... but sure has for her...i don't know what she is using but gosh...it will wash the color out of anything.

i ususally use 2 or 3 and add some synthrapol if I'm worried about a red or blue etc.

If the quilt has really dark colors i use 2.

I usually use one fresh one and through in a couple of used ones that aren't too dark yet. They can be used more than once.

thank you. I ended up using 3 just in case and they were almost a light gray when done. Worked perfect! Thanks!

I did not know you can use them more than once! I have noticed that some are hardly colored when the wash load is done. Thanks!

You can also cut them in half, or thirds, if you are washing a small load, like new fabrics, or fqs. I do this alot too. I think, in your case, just one would have been enough. They work pretty could actually!...
