Question About Combining Homespuns and Cotton

Hi, everyone! Hope everyone is staying warm!

I'm putting together a lap quilt where the center is all done in homespuns. The borders will be cotton, though, with cotton appliques on the center homespun blocks. Do you have any experience with combining the two fabrics like this? I'm not sure if the slightly different weights will cause an issue. Thanks!

Are your homespuns cottons?

I just use them together...I think you are saying something like beef and a roast.

Here's a recent post.

basically, pre wash everything.

I have done it in several quilts. Never had a problem!

I have combined homespun with cotton. Do prewash homespuns because they shrink a lot..

The weights won't cause any differences unless you are hand quilting. I've made a couple of couch quilts using a combo of these fabrics and had no problems. I found it easier for me to use different needles when hand quilting the homespun than when hand quilting the cotton. I can't remember what I used, but I seem to think it was a longer needle that worked better than a between. I hand quilt without a hoop - perhaps that made the difference.

I've used it in combination. No issues, the only things are that it shrinks, ravels very easily, so pre-wash one or two times before cutting out the pattern. I did machine stitch around my fabric before washing to cut down on the fraying, raveling since it is so loosely woven. The only other thing is if you are planning on hand quilting as IAmCatOwned stated above, my normal needle size was a struggle(flannel backed as well) so I played around with my needles to find the one that wasn't so hard to push through. Tying one is not as bad. I am just starting out machine quilting, and haven't used combination fabrics yet, so I can't comment on that.Good luck with your project.

Yeah, both are cottons, but the homespun fabrics are a looser weave, which creates a different weight.

Thanks, everyone! I always prewash my fabrics to shrink them before sewing, but sadly didn't serge the ends of the homespuns, so I lost a bit in the unraveling. Still enough for the pattern, though!

I've used homespun with flannel. Both were prewashed and I had no problem with them.
