Question About Digital Copies of Quilting Magazines
Is there a print option? I know when I buy the physical/paper magazine and can copy the pattern (for my own use) and mark it up with notes or cut out the pattern - especially the paper pieced patterns.
I know one of the advantages of digital is instant download and no mailing costs. What are some of the other advantages? Also, is it actually on our computer or are we just given access to it. I'm concerned with this part because so many of the companies are going out of business like Borders did. |
You didn't specify which magazine you were interested in, but I have a print subscription of Quilter's World, which also allows me access to the digital subscription. I can download the magazine as a PDF to my computer. I searched the FAQs and they do specifically say you can download, but I didn't see anything about the printing. I would expect you would be able to print a copy for yourself since you have paid for it. They also have "web bonuses" which are often same pattern different sized quilts or templates that you can print.
You might try emailing customer service of whatever magazine you are interested in and asking them directly. Advantages - you get it sooner, saves space, access to back issues. |
Thank you Katie!
I was thinking of the Quilting Quickly Magazine. |
Almost all have the option to print.

I have several digital subscriptions for quilt magazines. I send the patterns I want to my Kindle Fire as a pdf file. I have the pattern easily accessible when I go fabric shopping or to have a copy handy when I'm sewing. I can save it as doc file and make notes or edit as I go.

I ordered the Tradition with a Twist book earlier this week as a digital version. I love that I can chose to print just the few pages I need for a particular pattern, without the bulk of a whole book. But I do love hard-copy books, too, since "thumbing" through a physical book is (to me) easier than flipping through digital pages.

Thank you! Great info.

I have 'Quilting Quickly' as a digital download. I can't print it just certain pages as it is like one long page. It rolls and rolls down. I also bought a hard copy to have. But I really don't think I can print a copy of it. It doesn't seem likely. It's not like 'Love of Quilting' where you flip the pages and can print certain pages. Sorry.

I don't have any digital copies of magazines, but with most electronic documents, your computer should allow you to highlight the portion you want to print then print just that portion. It works on pdfs that I receive from other places. with the document on the screen, try right-clicking and see what your options are.

I have Quilting Quickly on my Ipad and can print whatever pages I want. Love these digital magazines -- don't have room for hard copies.

Once you download the PDF format, you can print any page that is in that file. From the left of the toolbar at the top there is a box that tells you what page you are on, 1 (in box) /100, etc. As you roll the pages the number in the box changes to that page number. When you click the printer icon it will show print All pages or print which page number you want. You can list "1,3,8,12" and it will print just those pages. The download icons were on the right hand side towards the top on Love of Quilting and Quilters World. |
I was wondering about digital subscriptions. I didn't know if there was a time limit as to how long you could keep them.

Usually you can download them as pdf where they live on your computer and you can access them at any time for ever and ever. You can also print any part or all of the magazine if you want. I don't usually print the whole magazine--only print the patterns I like. Some subscriptions use Adobe Air which I hated because it's not necessarily user friendly for me--clicking on the little space at the end of the page to turn pages (that page turning sound drives me crazy :) ! Then there's the zooming in and out (I have eye issues). You can download it to your computer but you still have to enter a password to be able to look at it. I did however, find a button all the way at the bottom of the screen that enables you to download it as a plain pdf--boy was I happy to find that! Can you tell I hate Adobe Air? Seems like a lot of the digital magazines are using it but so far Quilters World is not and I also downloaded my copy of Quilting Quickly as a plain pdf. That being said, I love my digital editions even if they are using Adobe Air.

It comes in PDF format and you can print it out if you want or not

I just downloaded an e-book on string quilts. Then since I like to take them with me, I printed it out too. I don't have any fancy i pads and such, so this worked for me. I have the printed one to take to the store, and the pdf if I need it. Some of the things, once downloaded, I just right click and there is "print" smile..

Im not sure about all of the mags out there but If you're able to download to a PDF, you should be able to print...

JCROW, you may be able to print what you want from "Quilting Quickly." Check to see if your computer will let you choose what you want to print from a single computer screen. By that I mean the entire computer screen's copy and or graphics or a single picture or quotation. I am very careful about copy written material or material from sites that specify that copies of material on the sites are not to be taken.
I have a Mac and can do it several different ways. I've noticed that a number of computers running Windows operating systems can do it too. Take a look and see if your computer is capable of doing this. It's time consuming for large amounts of information and graphics but it does work. Hope this helps. Good luck. Pat |
I would recommend getting familiar with Snipping Tool, which is a free program that came with Window's Vista and Window's 7 (maybe others that I don't know). It is extremely user friendly. It lets you isolate any part of what is on your screen. What you select can be saved and printed by way of any image program you may use. Also, it goes immediately to your clipboard and can be pasted into Windows Paint, another freebie that you almost certainly already have. You shouldn't have to have a Kindle or laptop in order to have easy access to the magazine you bought. If it was paper you could snip out the part you want to use, and these digital tools provide the same access. If you paid for the digital magazine, I see nothing wrong with getting the parts of it that need to be next to your sewing area. You wouldn't be allowed to share or sell anything you reap from the magazine in this way, any more than you could if it was printed.

To print from your iPad you need a wireless printer on your home network. Operating system 5.0 or higher automatically. gives you Air Print on your iPad to allow for printing. Very easy.
I bought a wireless printer just so I could print from my iPad. It is slick to sit in the living room and print ehat I want from computer (Windows) or iPad or iPhone. Printers are cheap and new ones are wireless. And very easy to set up. |
Oh and Snag It is a cheap and easy to use programm that lets you do what Snipping Tool does. I am still using Windows XP!

I have gotten several digital magazines (pdf) and like the idea I can print just what I want to have at hand (a pattern and instructions) and move the magazines to a CD for saving - like a virtual bookcase - or something I may want to refer to quite a bit, I have on my external drive. That way my hard drive on my main computer is not getting clogged up with stuff. :-)
Another is a Kindle book, there is a free Kindle computer app that allows you to download books to your PC - I like this for recipe books or craft books - and from there I can print too. And yes, I love snip-it - it has come in very handy. Marysewfun |
Oh my! It is so much fun learning how illiterate I am! Snip it. Snag it. LOL. I have a wireless router but am still using XP....but did find where I could purchase a different app so am going to do my best to figure it out....then I'll see about snipping or snagging!! This board is amazing!!!
