I bought the fabric to make a couch size throw using the d9p. I bought two different fabrics. Do I need to add another color to have 3 fabrics? If I just use the two do I make all of my blocks the same or do I do every other one different? One more question what size do I cut the blocks? I was thinking of starting out with 5 in blocks. I hope you understand what I'm trying to ask and can help me.

Hey cc bear! I'm currently doing a d9p. I like the scrappier look to it so I have 6 different fabrics I am working with. Well I like the controlled scrappy look I should say. I think the best part about this pattern is you can do it whichever way you like a get different effects. Maybe try drawing it out with colored pencils to get a better idea of what a few blocks would look like first and then you can decide from there if you'd like to introduce another color in. Good luck! And post some pics of your progress!!

Oh yeah I forgot to add my blocks i started as 3" blocks and I just arrange all my 3" blocks into a scrappy nine patch making sure I like how each one looks next to the fabrics it'll be with before sewing it all together. Maybe switching up the order of colors in your blocks will switch up your overall pattern a little. Or maybe it won't if you're using fewer colors?

Hi everyone - I have done a few d9p quilts, and I have done with a few fabrics and a lot of fabrics. I like it both ways. If using lots of fabrics, try using pieces all from the same line so they have a cohesive look. I made another one with different ocean water colors batiks, 1 tan sandy color, and a blue/tan shell print. It came out looking very contemporary and I really liked it.

I did mine with 5 inches squares. It is a I Spy with 2 background colors. the baby shower was yesterday. It was a hit. I had attached the thread that I posted the finish top in. Scroll down it's towards the bottom.

Hope this helps.

I recently taught a class and everyone used three fabrics. Color one was the four corner blocks that is the predominate color that won't be cut. Color two (the strip after cutting) was the center block on the top and bottom row of the nine patch (and the first and third block in row two/middle row). The center block is the stand alone color that is being cut down into the smaller square. The individual block size is 4.5 and unfinished block is 12.5 ~ the participants are making 35 nine patch blocks and the finished size of the quilt is approximately 60 x 84 (5 across and 7 down). Hope this clear and helps, if not PM me.

Oh that is nice and I like the ideas. hummmmmmmm thinking now

adyldrop 09-19-2008 05:58 AM

see now to me carol's looks a lot like hayes corner block--only easier to assemble i'm sure. cool beans.

Carol W 09-19-2008 06:21 AM

I've never seen a Hayes Corner block.

I sewed the blocks the way that Eleanor Burns does for a 9 patch.
It is very easy and you get 2 blocks done in the same time it would take to do 1 block and then rotate the squares to make the disappearing 9 patch.

Carol W 09-19-2008 06:51 AM

It does look similar.

I like the colors too!!

I'm making the quilt for me. The rest of my immediate family has quilts that I made for them.

I don't know about all of you, but it seems as though when I make something for me, it seems to take longer. lol

Do you have a link to Eleanor Burns doing the 9 patch? What's the secret?

Thanks

Well I went back and bought a 3rd fabric for my d9p. I posted the pic of the fabric on the pictures page. I can't start on this until I finish a couple of other projects but I'll keep you all posted.

Here's one of my "tossed 9s" quilts. I really like how it turned out. It's in Strawberry Splendor fabrics.

ccbear66 09-20-2008 10:39 AM

That's really pretty. I hope mine turns out. I'll let you guys know when I've started it.

Here's another variation of Tossed 9s -- in ocean colors. I don't do a pattern, per se, because I like the really tossed look. I called this one "9s Tossed to Sea". You can't see it in the picture, but all the blue colored fabrics have ocean themed prints - fish, seaweed, shells, etc. The solid light tan is lightly marbled to look like sand, and the blue/brown/tan is a shell print. It went to a hospice in Southern California for an auction for their annual fundraiser. I can't wait to see how much it goes for!! Very exciting. Please pray for it - for a lot of money for the hospice. Thanks!!!

I don't have a link to EB's 9 patch. It was on one of her shows on tv.

Cut two pieces of fabric the same size. They need to be square. Put them right sides together and sew one side. Then sew the opposite side. With the blocks sewn together cut the blocks in thirds. The center pieces that are not sewn may be larger than the two pieces that are sewn together. I just cut a little from those pieces so that they are the same size as the sewn pieces. You then sew one loose piece to each of the sewn pieces. The blocks will now have 3 strips sewn together. You put the two blocks right side together and sew them together again. You then cut into thirds again and sew the loose pieces to the sewn blocks.

You now have two completed 9 patch blocks.
