Question about edges of pre-cuts
1 Attachment(s)
I've made a few things with pre-cuts (a duvet cover and a wall hanging) and I'm frustrated with the zig-zag edges. Where the heck is the edge of the fabric? Is it at the bottom of the zig-zag (A) or is it at the top of the zig zag (B)? See pic below for A and B. The zig-zag is about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch and it makes a difference in achieving the correct sized squares according to patterns. Thanks in advance for the clarification!

I was told which ever I pick but keep to the same all the time.this may be wrong with others but it seemed like an easy comment to remember.

years of pinking shears.. the line we drew... did not have the templates of today.. was cut line.. thus, the edge. And that was for Marsha Brady style clothes we made.
old school.. :0) good luck on which line you choose.. I think the inside choice will help with strength of fabric next to sewn line.. less chance of a stress rip. yes? |
Place the strip on a cutting mat and see how the piece lines up with the markings on the mat. Then, stay consistent with how you sew each seam. I'm not a big fan of precuts...

I read posts about quilters who have a problem with the pinking edges of pre cuts. I have never given it a thought. I put fabric edges together and sew.

Me, too, Bella. I just don't think I'm a good enough quilter for it to matter. Line up the edges and go for it. My points are off on occaision, but they are off on occaision no matter what I do.

Have you measured the pieces from outside edge to outside edge or inside to inside edges? That should help you decide.
If you are sewing simple blocks of squares/rectangles it will be less of an issue. If you are cutting them into triangles for a more complex block, it would be more important to be as precise as possible. |
I'm with you Bella and Lisa. I just put them together and sew. Usually with the took of the point against my 1/4" foot. Works every time.

the edge of the fabric square is B, the points of the zig zag.

i would take a ruler and find the size by looking to see if the package size hits the A or B.
