Ok, so now that i have a darning foot, yeah :) , in the next couple weeks i'm going to be trying it out. What i'm wondering is this. If i want to do both free motion, and some quilt in the ditch on a quilt, what is the best way to do the quilt in the ditch? Should i do it with my old foot, where i would have to turn and twist the quilt to do it, or do some people quilt in the ditch with their darning foot? I think with the darning foot i wouldnt have to turn and twist the quilt as i sew, but i wonder if it wouldnt make as nice a quilt in the ditch? Or would it? :) What do some of you do?

I stitch in the ditch using my walking foot. I don't like the way it looks when I use my darning foot. Just my opinion though. See what works for you.

I do the same as littlehud.

hmmm, that's exactly what i had wondered---thanks guys!!! :)

I'm with littlehud. The walking foot just guides it along, nice and smooth.

Next time you try free motion quilting, try using an ope toe free motion foot rather than a darning foot. Not knowing the machine that you are using makes it difficult to recommend a particular foot, but most darning feet have a very small circular hole making it difficult to see. An open toe free motion foot will make it much easier to see where you have been, where you are currently stitching and where you need to go.
Just an idea, but see if this works for you. |
So far I have used the walking foot for stitching in the ditch, it works really gate.
Now as for free motion quilting with the darning foot, if you hear screams in America its only me, cause I am having a go tomorrow to try YET again to get this to work for me. Wish me luck |
I have a BSR so most of my problem is solved, but one thing that really helped was a single stitch plate. It helps to keep the fabric more stable and makes the sewing crisper, if you understand what I mean.
