I am doing a hand appliqué block with flowers in a vase which has 22 pieces. After I cut them out and do the turning with the starch do I baste them all together and sew them on as 1 piece or do I sew them on individually? Some of them overlap each other as well.

I use Roxanne's glue- small dots to keep them in place. Some people baste, I find the glue much faster and easier.

you can build your applique piece all together- then place it on your back ground if that works well for you- or you can build right on the background- either technique is used- depending on the project and the ease of constructing without background or with background-
it is your project- do it the way you think is best for you |
I think there are as many techniques for hand applique as there are quilters who do it.

I'm New to hand appliqué and really enjoy it, I'm just afraid if I do it as one piece it will come up
|
I start with the bottom piece and sew it down, then stack as necessary. Most applique patterns give you a stitching order. Some people baste as they go, others glue, others just stitch.
|
The pattern pieces usually have numbers on them starting with 1. This would be your first piece, I would applique it to my block. Then proceed to piece number 2. Depending on the size of the piece i may use applique pins or glue. I hope this helps. Best of luck.

I love applique..... I use glue and then sew all the pieces together before putting them on the background. I make a pattern out of freezer paper and number the pieces. I make marks to help me place pieces that overlap. The outcome is usually fantastic, if I do say so myself. My avatar was done this way..... did I mention that I love applique?
