I have made many of these bags but without a magnet. At what point in the making do I insert a magnetic closure and where does it go? In the lining so it is hidden? Thank you all.

The magnets that I got have to be put in the lining prior to putting it together with the bag itself so it will be hidden in the lining, batting, and outside piece.

I put mine in right before I put the outside fabric bag inside of the lining. However I have forgotten to do this once and went in the bottom of the bag and put them in after I sewed the topstitching. It did work but I have tried never to do it that way again.

thank you

What kind of magnet are you all using?? Is it the kind for bags with the prongs, where the magnetic snap is on the outside of fabric, or what exactly? I tried the snap and it was waaaayyy too strong, so I would like to find one with a little less magnetic power.

I put my magnet about an inch down from the top.

I used one in one of my first bags and will never use one again.

Can you explain why you would not- I am making my first bag (Not BT) but another one and thought it would be good to keep it closed and not so open :-)

I have 2 different kinds to try....I may get to do it today. If I do, I will let you know how it turned out.

Sounds great and good luck!

Sorry, I should have included that with first post.
I find it takes two hands to open and I have to give too much of a tug which seems to be weakening the fabric in that area. The area does not 'stand' up when closed, but seeems to fold down on itself. I am not sure if using a more firm batting/interfacing would help, but I will be using a tab from now on. Just seems stronger.

I've put in many magnetic snaps in purses. I always put a square of iron on interfacing over the area where the snap goes and then cut a piece of plastic (from a milk jug or like) and put the prongs through the plastic before putting on the metal washer that comes with the snap. I've never had a problem with fabric tearing. If the top sags it may be because the snap is too far down.

This might help.

Thank you, all. I used the black ones that Dritz makes that are made of rubber that you sew on. I found the right place to put it and I really love it !
