Question about a puffy quilt
I have a panel that has a snowman on it and I want to make that part stand out, be puffy! How do you do that the right way? I will be using it as a wall hanging.

Some ways to achieve that
* a high loft batting * minimal quilting on your snowman, with more on the background * an extra layer of batting in the snowman. You can take a look at this snowman that I did last year ... http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...t-t209528.html Not sure if you can notice it ... For the snowbank at the bottom, I added an extra layer of batting to help give it a more puffy look. Then tried to emulate a drift effect with the quilting. Technically right or wrong, it's how I did it! :) |
There are lots of ways to do trapunto. I have put the part I want extra puffy on top of an extra piece of batt and used water solvable thread to outline stitch around my shape. I then trim off the extra batt and make my regular quilt sandwich. I quilt my quilt and do an outline stitch around the shape again to keep the extra batt in the correct spot. I spritz my quilt to dissolve the water solvable thread if needed. Sometimes I don't bother removing it because it will come out in the first wash.

I would first use a layer of puffy batting in the area of the snowman. Use water soluable thread on the top side of the piece. Use large basting stitches around the area you want to be raised. Trim the excess batting, then layer the sandwich as you normally would with your regular batting. Once its all quilted, take a damp cloth to remove the soluable thread.

Thanks for the info. I couldn't even think of the right word for it. Trapunto is an unusual word. I am looking forward to starting this project.
