I'm still working on the 2nd DGD birthday quilt. I'm wondering about the size. I'm doing traditional blocks, but putting together the raggy way. Since I'm doing scrappy, my blocks came out different sizes, so I added sashing. the blocks ended up being 17.5". I'm thinking of 3 blocks across and 4 blocks down. I really wanted the quilt a little bigger; however, if I do 4 blocks by 5 blocks, it would be too big. Should I leave it this size? (This DGD will be 12, but is small for her age.) Or should I do a border? Now I wish I would have not done raggy, but I'm not going to take apart the sandwich part. Any suggestions? By the way, I don't want this to be a bed quilt; just something for her to cuddle up with.

can you post a picture? you can make a raggedy border no problem. instead of squares, they would be rectangles.

I think a border would be pretty! Would enjoy seeing a picture. Good luck!

thanks, Ronda. According to my calculations, the quilt with 12 blocks would be about 49" by 66". Here is a photo of 3 of the blocks:

If my calculations are correct, a 3 x 4 block quilt where the blocks are 17.5 inches will result in a 52 x 70 quilt which is plenty large for a snuggle quilt--especially for a small 12 year old girl. It will be twin size if you add much more to it. 72 x 90 inches is a standard twin size quilt. I made a 72 x 96 for a super single bed in a semi and it is too heavy for my Sis-in-law to drag in & out to wash. I used flannel for both sides and cotton batting.

Beverly, this is how I came up with my calculations. Since it's a raggy quilt, and I use 1/2" seams, I substracted 1 inch from each block. I used cotton for the top and flannel for the inside & back.
So, maybe the size I calculate will be big enough for a 12 year old girl?
