I've used flannel, cotton, & denim. I like 'em all! :)

I'am cutting homespun and denim now to make a rag quilt. Do you use a middle fabric? I thought I might put a piece of flannel in between but not sure if it might be too much.

I prefer using cotton for the top of my raggy quilts. for the last question about using denim & homespun -- to me, denim is heavy enough that you don't need an inside layer.
