I have a quilt top that I purchased that is full of smoke odor. I will hand wash it, but need to know what y'all think is the best soap to use.

When that happens to me I hang it outside for a few hours to air out..it works believe it or not. Then wash it in a gentle cycle using regulare tide with downy. Comes out great.

I smoke and quilt for customers. I wash the quilts before I return them to the customer. I use regular Purex, green cap Downy, and a dryer sheet rain scented. My customers can't believe I smoke because they cannot smell it on their quilts.

If it's just a top, not a quilt, I would be very wary of washing it. I would try airing it outside first in the shade. (Sunlight makes some fabrics fade very fast.)

Place it in an airtight container, before closing the lid put some "Activated Carbon" in an open container and place that in with the quilt then put the lid on.
It has worked for me. I ran a post on it and you can read the suggestions in case you need some of them at a different time but for this one I would do the Activated Carbon.
You get it at the pet store or pet store section of Wal-mart in the fish supplies. It is about $5 for a large jar.
