I have a bunch of fabric that I bought recently, that is dated from the 1980's. A great deal of it has no information on the selvage -- it appears to be quality fabric in most cases, but I have no idea who made it. I was wondering if companies only started printing their names and the name of the pattern relatively recently? Or do I just have a bunch of fabric from no-name companies that didn't bother to put their name on their stuff?

The only fabric I specifically remember seeing info on 'back when' was VIP by Cranston Printworks. Others may have done it, but most of the info was just on the end of the bolt.

Okay, that definitely helps. I'd say about a quarter of what I do have is by Cranston Print Works, and those are labelled. Most everything else is not. Thanks for the info :)

For a long time the only fabrics that had that info were decorating fabrics. The others started doing it about the late 80's early 90's. Sometime in the 70's they started making fabrics wider than 36".
