I buy the cheap eyeglass cleaner packets at WalMart and use them for needle cleaners if I get any GumUp

i agree with lori, i only use 505 and have never had a problem, just one time i had to use something from Joann fabrics because i was out of 505 and i had a guming problem but it was for a lap quilt so didnt have that much quilting to do on it and i had to clean the needle quite often , ever since i use nothing except 505

use just a light spritz, not heavy and you should have no problem. Altho I've only used Sullivan's in a pink can. Love it, spray basting was the way I was taught to layer quilts, Have never used pins. Have never had a problem with it gumming up my needle or machine.

If you used a Basting spray it should not gum up the needle, if it does, you may have gotten it a little heavy in some spots, Don't let anyone kill the joy of using a spray basting for your quilts. Its great

Elmers is not for quilting, it is for crafts. Go get an actual basting spray at a LQS or ask a salespersons help at JoAnns. I have never had any gumming up at all. I was told by a teacher in a class that before I started quilting to wipe my needle with a fabric softener sheet --tried it with the wiping and without---although it really does not gum up without, it sure runs smooth with. I usually re-wipe every so often. Rubbing alcohol is great for cleaning needles and machine surfaces.

Never, ever, ever have I had a needle gum up. But I also baste it, starch the back and let it lay flat for about 24 hours before I start FMQing. Good Luck. I love spray basting and would never go back to pins or thread basting again.

I no not every one has this problem but a heads up just in case. I keep having coughing spells and they got really bad when I spray basted anything. Well i told doctor and he took some test and told me any kind of spray is bad for your respatory problems but a spray adhesive can be very very dangerous. and he gave me some meds and told me stay away from any kind of sprays. I feel better cough a lot less but now my fingers get all stuck with pins :( .Check with your doctors

FKTsewing, I use Elmer's Spray basting all the time. Elmer's has several different products that are good for sewing.
