Have fun. Ruth

I'm teaching a beginner quilting class and we are doing a free BOM off the www (but we are going to do a block a week). The first block has HSTs and this is what I plan to teach them. You don't have to fuss with that pesky 1/8" when cutting, it's a little more forgiving when you sew, and when you trim, you get a very nice square.

Using the + one inch works much better for me, too.

Almost every time when I use just the + 7/8 inch, my squares end up skimpy.

I agree!!! I had much rather trim a little than risk having it too small.

My theory - when I cut triangles AROUND a template - just a little bit extra fabric is added - maybe only 1/32" per side, but if I add the two hypotenuse/diagonal edges, that's 1/16 of an inch - and then the outside edges also have a "smidge" extra -

So when I cut a (more or less exact) +7/8 inch square, then I end up with skimpy HSTs.
