Question about Thousands of Bolts website
 

I know I could write to them, and they'd answer me, but just thought someone here, who was on line anyways, might know:
I can't find anywhere on the site where it says how wide the fabric is, unless it's the extra wide.
Am I just not seeing something that's in plain view?

I now assume fabric is 40 inches wide. Some is wider like 42 or 43. HTH

I would presume all cotton, quilt type fabric to be 44-45 inches wide unless it specifically says otherwise in the description because that is the size of the looms it is woven on.

Lately, fabric has been closer to 42". Like everything else, we're getting less for more!

I've ordered from them a lot, and if the pieces are WIDE, they say so in the pictures. I'm usually looking at end cuts, ie; 15" x WOF. Those are usually 42" - 44". You get more fabric with an end cut than a fat quarter for almost the same price. My quilts are usually scrappy, or groups of scraps of one color, so the end cuts work out well.

since they sell name brand manufacturers/fabrics, i would think the widths would be somewhere between 42"-44". i order from them a lot and have gotten a lot of stonehenge or bali/hoffman batiks end of bolt pieces. today even if a fabric should measure a good 45" wof, it is not 45" of usable fabric due to the manufacturer's marking in the selvage. the selvages can take up at least 2" of fabric if not more.

i think the standard usable today is around 42".

When I'm figuring yardage I always count on only 40" of usable fabric. Anything more is just a bonus. :)

I order from them frequently and I always end up with 42" usable fabric after cutting off 3/4' of selvedges.

I received an answer, very very promptly

"Standard width for quilt shop cottons/flannels (42-44 inches) "

I guess I wish that was somewhere on their website. As it is now, they are allowed to send whatever width it is, and that is very 'not me.'

well thousands of bolts (TOB) do not determine the widths of fabric they can only send you what wof the manufacturers make the fabrics in. i imagine if they even tried to put wof on their website, it would be a can of open worms as people would start measuring and asking for refunds if the widths weren't what was stated. and the truth is TOB has no control over wof.

the fact that TOB is selling name brand lqs quality fabrics is enough for me. i know what to expect in fabric quality before i receive my order. TOB prices on name brand fabrics is less expensive than you would spend in the lqs. their prices on stonehenge is about $9/yd but at my lqs it is $13/yd. I'm sold on TOB prices and service.

I agree. It just seems that what I was sent, is something they could put on their website, somewhere. I'm not sure I'm going to tell them that. They answered my question, that's really all I asked

I order a lot from them, and the fabric is the same as if you bought it somewhere else. 40-42-44 inches. I haven't ordered anything I was upset with. They are name brands, but don't carry all the coordinating fabrics for each fabric they have, like a lot of places. But sure do have a mess of fabric. And I've spent way to much there.

Fabric -cotton quilting is on average 43 but taking away selages and waste it's about 42 I would assume all is that wide ESP since the specify extra wide, I have never ordered from them II use fat quarter shop for high end fabrics

Ditto. I always use the 40 inches in any math I am doing.

You are safe with this assumption - unless you are using much older fabrics than

42 inch wide fabrics are not 'new' - and, interestingly enough, some of the pricier brands are narrower than the VIP ones were.

I haven't bought much 'new' fabric for about five years, so can't comment with certainty about that - but I am very certain for 5-20 years ago.

Me, too, that even allows for a little shrinkage - and as you say, you end up with a bonus. :-)
