Question about Tshirt quilts

My niece asked me to make a quilt out of her old college tshirts - which I am happy to do. She dropped of 40 shirts... "washed and ready" she said.

My question is for the very start of the process. I always heard not to use fabric softener before doing the fusible interfacing. When she said "washed and ready" I am sure that she used fabric softener.

Do you think I need to rewash all of these? Or will the interfacing work with these even though I am sure she used softener??

What do you guys think?

Better safe then sorry as interfacing is expensive.

I agree with Tartan and isn't there some laundry soap with softener in it?

I agree, better to be safe than sorry. I use to use the lightweight fusible at JAF from Pellon. Wait for a good sale because you used a lot of it.

Why don't you just ask her? If she used softener, then rewash. If not, one less step!

My thoughts exactly cuz I wouldn't want to wash em if I didn't have to!

I'm presently working on my 4th t-shirt quilt. (I have 4 grand daughters) I never questioned how they were washed and I never had a problem with the interfacing. 40 sounds like an awful lot of t-shirts to me though, although mine were all twin size because they were made from their high school t-shirts and they wanted to take the quilt along with them when they went off to college and the beds in the dorms are twin size. Good luck and have fun.

just janet - yes I think 40 shirts sounds like an awful lot too :) I guess I will figure it out as I go. My niece just wants throw size for on her couches. I think it will be fun

I'm currently working on a t-shirt quilt for my nephew; the blocks are all framed, and I just have to get sashing and borders on it now. His color choices were Marine blue and red, and I am putting a bit of gold in also. And I did wash some of the t-shirts before using them in the quilt.
