My mother loved to piece quitls. She is now in the nursing home and cannot do anything with her hands. This year for Christmas the family wants to give Mother a quilt for her bed using one of her quilt tops. Since I am the only one with any quilting knowledge, I am in charge. Problem is, I have never tyied a quilt. I decided on tying so that everyone can participate.

I have a full-size floor quilting frame. Should I set the quilt up on this? What do I need to tye with? Like I said, I have never do a quilt like this. Any help is appreciated. We are not doing this will the week between Christmas and New Years when all the family is here.

Thanks, Elsie Keaton

I tie most of the baby quilts I make. I use all 6 strands of embroidery floss and tie with a square knot. I put mine in my frame just to keep my layers from shifting. I have to pin baste as my frame doesn't roll the three layers separately. That's a really sweet thing for you and your family to do for your mom. Good luck!

Here is a site with a lot of ways to tie
http://www.quiltersbee.com/tyingaquilt.htm

I use the large balls of crochet cotton or embroidery floss to match each area

post a picture when it is finished. and welcome to the board

The top I am using is a bow tie. I plan to tye in the center of the bow. It is done in greens. Should I tie with white of green? I am going to back it in dark green to show less dirt and stains. My frame rolls so I will not have to baste or pin.

I would probably go with the green that is most complimentary to the other greens in the quilt. I don't use white just because it looks grubby too easy from just being handled, but that's me. You might try both and see which one looks the best.

When you tie a quilt, how far apart should one put the knots? Is there a rule (or rule of thumb) for the spacing?

I tie alot of my quilts and I've used both embroidery floss and yarn....I tie them according to what it says on the batting (every 4 inches for most but have done as much as every 6 inches)

Your batting label will list the spacing it requires. Usually, most are tied as far apart as your hand. A very loose type batting would need to be spaced closer.
