Question about using layer cake vs. Jelly roll
I have a Tonga treat Natick in a layer cake but need a jelly roll. Can't find one anywhere. Would it be acceptable to cut the layer cake into strips sewing them into the required lengths which vary from 3 to 36 inches. I have an applique that could cover an are that may have a lot of seams.

we are piecers after all :)

You have my permission - but you don't need it! It's your quilt so you make the rules about how to make it! I'm sure it will be lovely.
|
Do whatever you need to do to make it work. Your quilt your way.

If you have enough, of course.

Seams seem to hide in batiks, if you can make enough fabric it should work. Give it a try.

If you have enough fabric and don't mind the seams, go for it. Should work just fine. Just make sure you have enough
fabric. Nothing is more frustrating than being short a couple of strips. Sue |
I have done this before and have had no problem. I say go for it.

I have substituted but I always read the pattern first to make sure I will have enough and that the seams will be where they should be.

If most of the strips are less than 10 ", then it makes sense. It could be a lot of extra seams if most are longer, but there is no reason you could not do it. I would be careful about strips that are 11" - 13". Try to place the seam closer to the middle of that strip (rather than sew a 10" to a tiny piece). Please let us know how it works out.
