question about using neck ties
 

Hey all, my cousin has asked me to make a tuffet for her using her late husband's ties. The tuffet is foundation pieced onto a muslin foundation that has a lightweight interfacing ironed to it.

I have taken the neck ties apart and of course, the fabric is cut on the bias. Some of the ties are silk and are very wiggly so I believe I will need to stabilize them by fusing a lightweight interfacing to them before I can even cut them to the appropriate size. However, some of the ties are made of heavier fabric and are pretty easily handled even though they are cut on the bias.

So my question is this. Since I am foundation piecing them is it necessary to fuse interfacing to all the ties, or do I only need to do it to the ones that are most obviously slippery and stretchy?????

The heavier ones probably don't need extra interfacing. I would fuse lightweight interfacing to the silk ties and any that are lightweight or slippery.

I made a necktie quilt and ironed interfacing to all of them. It helped with the bias stretch whether they were thick polyester or silk.

Some of the ties, even though they are cut on the bias, will ravel easily and quickly. The interfacing should help cut down on that issue.

I made a pillow out of ties (fan) and I ironed a lightweight interfacing to all of the ties. They were much easier to work with that way and didn't take that much extra time to do it.

I threw all my ties in the washing machine and dryer.....if they did not survive I threw them out. This was done before I cut them apart. I lost very few.....they actually washed up very nice. I did iron an interfacing on just to double stablize them

They also make a beautiful table topper; make it round and it is really pretty!

I would use interfacing on All ties. It makes the quilt Look better and it will quilt better and keep its shape better.
