I absolutely love precuts. I do mostly charity quilting, and can whip out an adorable quilt in a pretty short time using precuts. I have lots of free patterns for them. I usually get Kauffman or Moda, mainly because the quality fabric is there. Then I scout around for matching fabric for the backing and borders. I have a local store who has good prices and can usually find fabs to match my existing precuts. I love getting layer cakes and can then cut them into 4 charm packs. Each person has their own special way of quilting and the designs they like to use. I only occasionally make a fancy quilt, enjoy the speedy ones. And I quilt them on my long arm with a simple meander. I love to see the variety of designs in a collection, and this way I get to use them. Most stores only carry a very few selections of a collection.

When i started collecting fabric for my current project I hit all the shops in my area and bought fat qtrs and yardage. As the project is scrappy I realized that I didn't have as many different prints as it needed. Well....Keepsake offered a deal on 10" squares and I knew that a stack would probably do the trick. This was the first time I've purchased precuts and am very happy with them, nice selection and good price.

Pre cuts are more expensive but give you such a wide variety of prints. I like them for totes and placemats...small items.I find the best buy is layer cake. You can make 4 jelly roll cuts 2 1/2 x 10, and 4 charm squares 5 x 5 and if you prefer you have a great big block of 10" for many projects. They are pretty accurately cut and this is a big plus for a beginning quilter. Good luck and welcome to the QB

I agree. Many times when you buy these "pre-cuts", there are errors in the cutting that really make using them difficult. I prefer to cut my own. Why pay someone to do something that is not accurate?

I think one of the drawbacks is the fact that there will be some pieces that you just don't like and would probably
use, which would be waste. I do use precuts at times, and for the most part enjoy using them.

Of all the hundreds of pre cuts I have bought only one had wonky cuts and it said on the label cut by hand. I don't buy the off brand pre cuts not matter how cheap they are. I guess I've been lucky not having any trouble with bad cuts.

It depends on what you are using them for. I like precuts by the better quality fabric suppliers but otherwise the cheap ones are thin and cheap and not always cut properly. Often you can get a whole line in different sizes this way but do you need it that way. More expensive in the long run but a time saver in most cases.

I like precuts because you get fabric that goes together without having to buy many different patterns, make sure they go together (something I'm not good at) and it allows you to get to the piecing and quilting more quickly.

I am making a quilt now with precut layer cakes and found that they shrunk when washed and I had to really be careful when cutting the rectangle and squares I needed. But the advantage to the precuts is that I will make a second quilt from the same fabric but the placement of the patterns will be different. The quilts are for my 4 and 6 year old granddaughters who share a room. The pattern I am following is a 64 x 64 inch square, so I had to add other fabrics to make it a twin size.

I like using precuts and yardage - just depends on the pattern I want to use and if I want a lot of variety in the fabric that coordinates. I have had great luck with the precuts being cut accurately and I order most of mine from MSQC.
