question for binding a scalloped quilt
 

Do you use a double fold binding on a scalloped edge quilt? I know you need bias binding but do you just use single fold or double fold. Thanks for any answers - I have never bound a curved edge quilt before.

Well I would say it depends on the size of the project myself. I would use a smaller one on the little table topper, or the larger on a quilt. The bias edges are the best to use on the scalloped so it will conform to the shapes. I use a double fold made on a clover bias tape maker for either project. I like the use of fabric prints or stripes rather than the store bought solids.

Here is a tutorial I found to solve all my questions. Kinda lengthy but thorough. She has you proceed through the process step by step. baby steps! The best part for me was the instruction to not connect all the binding in the beginning. Connect as you go so the connected seams do not end up in the "vallies". That was a major concern for me. Just that one bit of advice was priceless.

Thank you both. It is a large quilt - beautifully quilted by LA and I don't want to ruin it putting the binding on (even more scared to cut the scalloped edge). Off to watch video....

Thanks for the link and the tip! I "connect as I go" for all of my binding and have never had a problem with wrinkles. It all lies so flat!

No double binding and just use as normal but use the stretch to help.

Your situation sounds like the one I experienced! I paid nearly $500 for the quilting and was scared to death to mess up the binding. 3 years later I found the site and exchanged emails with the designer and that gave me the courage to proceed. Have won many ribbons and $ with that quilt. Go for it!

I took a class from Darlene Zimmerman a few weeks ago and she said to use single fold bias binding for scalloped edges.

The other way to go is with a facing instead of binding.

I've used double fold and had no problems. When I handsew the binding down to the back, I also "tack" a little pleat in each valley. I don't like it when the excess fabric just poofs out there!
