Question on Bobbin thread color

I posted a few weeks ago about using machine embroidery designs to quilt my tabel runners. Thank you for all the responses!! There is one question that I forgot to ask. Typically I just use white bobbin thread with my designs but since I will be going through all the layers and really don't want white thread to show on the back of the runners do you think that it would work to have my bobbin thread match the color of my backing fabric? I'm just wondering how it would make my design look if I had dark thread in the bobbin and then the embroidery design had light colors in it.

Thanks!!

Mindy

if you are doing a straight stitch design, and your tensions are balanced, it should work out just fine. i would test it first.

Mindy,
It should look just fine. Be sure to do a test stitch-out first with all the same layers so you can be sure the tensions are balanced. You may want to loosen the top tension just a tad so the bobbin thread doesn't pull to top. As for the back, who cares what it looks like? It will be face down on the table anyway.

You have to test on the same type of sandwich to see if your machine will handle it. My beloved Bernina 1230 has no faults except I cannot use different colors in top and bobbin unless I don't mind little dots of the opposite color here and there. Even though my machine's tension balance is exceptionally good, that is the one thing that does not work no matter how many times I fiddle with the tension.

balance is the key, I use a different color bobbin all the time, just want to make sure top thread is pulled down to the bottom and not the other way....with a little practice it can be done....but like someone else said if it is a table runner, why bother unless it is an issue just for you OR....sometimes I will make a two sided runner, Spring on one side and Fall on the other.....Two for the price of one.....

Like the two for 1 idea on the table runner, never thought of that and then it wouldn't matter what bobbin color I would use. Really it's not a big deal to me what the back looks like but a couple of the runners are going to my sister who, let's just say I have a love/hate relationship with. That is the only reason that I want the bobbin thread to blend in with the backing fabric.

Thank you for all your help, you guys are awesome!!

Mindy
