What is the difference between the "Monk's Cloth" and "Burlap"?
Thanks, JOY |
That's a good question. I'll be watching to see the answer.

Burlap is rough and to do anything with it like latch hooking you need to pull threads.
Monks cloth is a soft evenweave (meaning four strands under/four strands over) used for swedish weaving and some embroidery. Comes in several colors now. Although so does burlap now. I get my Monks cloth through Nordicneedle.com |

You have to be very careful with burlap, he comes with a terrible odor, and has a chemical on it that a lot of people are allergic to. It started out original color a medium brown, now many colors are available....
Monks cloth is usually always white, if soft to the touch, is an extremely loose weave, and is used in some crafts when you stitch over the weave..... Very different fabrics.....(Employee of Joann for many years) |

Burlap
A loosely constructed, heavy weight, plain weave fabric. It has a rough hand. Appropriate for draperies and decorative items. Monk's Cloth A heavy weight cotton fabric utilizing the basket weave variation of the plain weave. Used for draperies and slip covers, monk's cloth is an example of 4 x 4 basket weave. It has poor dimensional stability and tends to snag. http://www.fabric.com/SitePages/Glossary.aspx |
Burlap is used alot with farm products. Has a very rough feel and a strong smell. Not suitable for clothes.
Monks cloth is a soft cotton even weave fabric. Local Wal-mart carries monks cloth. |
I sure learned a lot today! :) I did not know burlap had chemicals on it. I just assumed it was used for farming, etc., People used to make their clothes with it. The burlap and Monk's cloth looked similar to me. Wow, @sewgull, I did not know Walmart sold it. I will look. I want to thank everyone for helping me understand the difference between the two fabrics. :)

I used Monks cloth yrs ago to make some throws & pillows. You can do beautiful weaving designs on it! Also used it for some placemats with frayed edging.
In Jr high we used burlap to do hook rugs on. Also made fabric lined Xmas stockings that had cross stich designs on. The burlap you find in the stores now don't have all the chemicals that the brown stuff that was used for farming bags did. Alot of ppl still use burlap to protect thier newly seeded lawns from birds. Both come in several different colors now. Not everyone carries all the colors. Here's a site that has lots of swedish weaving on monks cloth ex: http://nettiesneedleworks.com/patterns.htm |
