Question for "Craftsy Unlimited" Members

For those of you who have enrolled in Craftsy Unlimited:

What are your thoughts about it?

I'm wavering. The cost of one year is approximately the cost of purchasing 6 classes ($20 each).

Thanks.

SusieQOH 02-14-2018 05:39 PM

I'm not enrolled and I'll tell you why- I don't have the time to devote to hours of watching.I know myself- if I was paying 15.00 or so a month I would be mad that I wasn't spending the time to watch the shows. I barely have enough time to watch the classes I've bought- around 6 or 7.
I'm sure there is an audience for it but I'm not one of them.

Unless I'm disciplined enough to watch the hours of classes enough to get the price break, I avoid memberships. For me, they are not cost effective. YouTube virtually teaches you everything. If not, then I buy a class individually. Just depends on you and what you plan to do with your membership. It's a personal choice.

I prefer to buy classes as I like, my schedule is way too unpredictable to get my $15 a month's worth.

Kwiltr 02-14-2018 07:25 PM

I've seen it advertised and haven't investigated. I have classes I've bought both on Craftsy and IQuilt that I have not found time to watch yet, so I'm not going to buy or spend anymore until I at least do that. If I spent as much time actually quilting as I do on the internet reading about it and watching YouTube videos about it and going to quilting forums, I'm sure I'd crank out a heck of a lot more quilts than I do and probably not be as overwhelmed with quilting information and options out there. Okay, I really need to cut back on my screen time :o:D.

I like to play the videos while I'm sewing, or I place my tablet on the ironing board and listen/watch while I iron.

letawellman 02-14-2018 07:31 PM

I haven't done this either.
As others have said, I would be mad at myself for spending money on something I'm not using (gym membership, anyone?).

I have bought a few classes on Craftsy - and have watched them several times - but I have my own little quirks about what I'm interested in, and lately, nothing on Craftsy has been appealing. But my focus may change 6 months from now, and I may buy 2 or 3 classes back to back.

But $120 worth? Nah, I'm averaging maybe one class per year right now.

And with spring and summer around the corner, that means vegetable gardening will take a lot of my time soon.

My thoughts exactly. Not worth it for me.

The difference, to me, is that I still have access to the individually purchased classes years later. If I have a membership, my access expires when the membership does. And I wouldn't want to commit to having a membership longterm.

Software companies, like Microsoft, have also gone this route and I hate it. I'd much rather own my copy of Office than have to rent it, and I take that option whenever I can.

maminstl 02-15-2018 06:47 AM

I would not sign up for a year, but might try a month or two if I want to dive in to a specific skill. I would like to reupholster a chair and they have a number of classes available although I don't know which one might be best - so I can see them all and pick out the information I want. I own lots of classes, some that I have not watched yet, but will when I need to.

Supposing you signed up for a year and then let it lapse- wouldn't you still keep the ones you've already bought? That was my understanding but not certain.

pokeygirl 02-15-2018 07:23 AM

I agree with you, SusieQoh........

You would keep any classes that you purchased individually, but that's an additional expense to the membership fee. You don't own any classes as a result of your membership.

Reba'squilts 02-16-2018 05:51 AM

I will not enroll. I will buy a class now and then but it is hard to find the time to watch. Would not pay me to enroll.

sewbizgirl 02-16-2018 06:45 AM

I thought the membership was $4.95 a month?? I must have misread.

I pay for monthly subscriptions to Netflix, satellite radio and also Pandora on my phone. But since I haven't fully utilized the few classes I have bought, I don't think it would make sense for me to join. I'm a doer more than a watcher, tho I have learned some valuable things from some classes, particularly Marti Michell's QAYG classes. It's fabulous.

MaggieLou 02-16-2018 07:00 AM

Personally, I don't think it's worth the money. I have a lot of their videos I have never watched. They seemed good at the time but the few I did watch didn't really seem that good. They don't really go into the detail I wanted.

NZquilter 02-16-2018 07:25 AM

I haven't enrolled, as I don't have time to watch to justify the cost. If the unlimited classes is still around once my daughters are high school age, (I plan to homeschool) I might get it for them, to expose them to more hobbies and DIY than just quilting. But that's a long way off!

cactusmomma 02-16-2018 07:58 AM

You don't have access to all the classes. There were enough classes that I wanted to watch that I got the membership for one year. I bought several classes before they offered the membership. By the end of the year I'll decide if I want to renew. It's kind of a personal thing.....depending on your interests.

mengler 02-16-2018 08:51 AM

Not that excited. I don’t have time to watch hours of classes either. I also find that the classes are in a giant list that takes time to sort thru. I don’t find the site easy to locate either. On top of that many of the “free” classes were free already or they’re for specific machines and software that I don’t own. I’ll look around during the trial but I’m not at all interested in a regular membership.

thrums 02-16-2018 11:47 AM

Thanks so much for your response. I thought I might like some of the baking classes. I was leaning toward it not being worth my investment because if you lapse in membership, you no longer have access to selected views. I'll keep cherry-picking my videos and going to youtube for other classes.

I appreciate everyone's input.

Onebyone 02-16-2018 07:48 PM

I can't feel guilty about $15 a month spent on anything. I have unlimited and I may watch four shows a month or none. I don't see what difference it makes. I watch more than quilting shows on Craftsy. It is not all about quilting. I watch while I sew.

leighway 02-17-2018 08:19 AM

I've bought over 60 craftsy classes through the years. I've loved them all and love having them available when I just want to sit down and get some inspiration. However, I NEVER pay more than 19.99 for a class, ever! it's not a killer to drop $20 every couple of months and you can keep an eye out for specific classes and wait for them to go on sale.

Grannies G 02-25-2018 10:50 AM

Try the free trial for seven days. If you don’t think you will use it much cancell on day 6. Then no charge. I found that I really only used it for about 4 classes. But gives you a chance to check out different ones. Skip around if a teacher doesn’t suit you go to another. For example one I watched her hand was always in the way, so I won’t waste my money on buying that particular class. Hope this helps

Yes, this drives me nuts!! I haven't upgraded Photoshop precisely for this reason. And I dread EQ ever going to this model.
